Altum angel price?

Recommended Posts

orinoco's altums have a "redder" tone. they demand a higher price as well.

on average, from where i am.. a piece size similar to a$1AUD coin costs about $20SGD. fish is before quarantine and very vulnerable. i lost 20 pieces this season :(

our fishes were received and exported 2 days after the season started and arrived another 2 days later. so they were really small and weak after all the shipping process :(

Hi Brissy,

How long ago did you buy your Altum? There have been no Orinoco at Pet City for at least the last 5 years. If you have brought it recently, then I can tell you that it was either a Peruvian (German Wild Caught) or a Manacapura (German Wild Caught). The Manacapura have a "pink" tinge and the last group that I got in had pink and red "freckles". The last group of Manacapura were one the best I have seen in the last few years because of that freckling.

Looks like a Peruvian :) Although there can be slight variations to an Orinoco, generally they have a super sharp narrow triangular shape with very elongated finnage. Damn I wish I had some. My dream is a 12 foot biotope-type tank with Orinoco, Heckel Discus and rays. *drools*

Just note that the peruvian fish is P. scalare, not P. altum.

The aquarium trade incorrectly uses the "altum'' name often though...not problem if its sold as the common name "peruvian altum"(even though the species name is P. scalare) but if they sell it as P. altum it is potentially misleading.

That is true. Ours are always Peruvian Altum.

Thanx for your help guys. I don't really mind what it is, although it is good to know. At the end of the day it is a nice fish and I like it :)

Ain't that sweet - :)

anyway, I'd imagine the difference in price would be $250-$350 or so.

There was a group of real altums for sale for $3k a while ago in Melbourne - from memory maybe 7 or 8 fish? full grown. Anther lot were being sold for $350-400 each.

Peruvian altums would be $30-60 depending on size.

Funny though how they are not called Peruvian scalare - which is what they really are. Altum sounds much more special (and expensive).

When i bought my tank I got a group of 7 ... I know nothing about them, but he told me they were "WC Peruvian Altums" or scalare as I believe they should be labelled :P

They're def growing on me ... full of personality and colour.

Any ideas what they're worth?

Wild caught fish do enter aus through other countries than the country of origin as many of the collectors of these fish work in partnership with wholesalers in certain countries and from countries that can nat export to aus.Caught wild then shipped to Germany then beyond? Is what you would or should expect but dep on wholesaler you may get breed from wild stock in germany insted .I know of a few importers that get wild stock from south america through other countries in asia as well as europe.

They are wild caught - and sold from German exporter. I like to make the distinction. Clearly I wasn't on the boat when they were netted and sorted - I wasn't on the plane and I certainly didn't see them in their holding tanks but they were sold as "wild caught". As I have both countries of "origin" I like to give the full story.

The ones that I was posting about from Glaser - from Sth America. Its been in my experience that there are some less scrupulous exporters who call F1's "wild" or if they are line bred from wild parents "wild caught". Again, all of this can be taken with a grain of salt - if you didn't net it, who is to say.

I do like giving the country of export if I know though - if you are looking to introduce new lines, don't you want to know that I didn't get it from you neighbour?

Thanks for that :) I wasnt trying to be a smart (_I_) ... Just never seen the 2 terms used together i.e German and WC.

Any ideas what they're roughly worth? (PC, what do u sell them for in store?)

Depends on the size and the wholesaler. In the last year Peruvian Altums have ranged from $29.95 to $54.95.

I'm often surprised and annoyed at the fluidity of fish prices. I know it has to do with the Euro and dollar and sometimes a wholesaler has to account for fish destruction and losses, but even with bread and butter - sometimes a black phantom costs under $2 sometimes its $3.50 or more. So annoying!

Wild Caught Oscars are the worst. Sometimes I can get them cheap, sometimes they cost more wholesale than most people retail - and that is on the same 7cm fish depending on when and where it came from. Weird
