luckyfish
Hi all, Just considering getting into Native shrimps, I just love the way they look. Has any one successfully kept the following: Darwin red nose Black more river caridina North Australian Chameleon shrimp Apparently they don't like tap water and the chemicals you add to treat the chlorine etc, and its recommended that you make up a water mix a week prior to water changes etc, has anyone actually done this or do they handle normal water changes fine? Cheers

frinkie
I've heard the same thing! I've kept a few native shrimp species and done water changes and whatnot like I have with all my other fish/shrimp and they were ok. Would be good to hear from an expert though! 1991brouwer
a mate has tried the cardinal shrimp and they all died off in 3 weeks god knows what he was doing wrong but personally id get a ibc and just do up water early and keep it moving with air stones
chooks
I suggest you get a Reverse osmosis unit. that's good enough to remove any dissolved solids in the water
netty_3164
I've kept both black moores (Dave accidentally out some in) and chameleons successfully using rain water and dechlorinated tapwater when the rain water tanks are empty. In my experience, tapwater doesn't really affect them if the dechlorinator is thoroughly mixed in the bucket in order to neutralize the chlorine/chloramine. Leaving the dechlorinated water out for a few days would be recommended I guess as a precautionary measure but ime, not really necessary. & yes, native shrimps are awesome, you should definitely try them out! My favorite is the chameleons, so many different colour variants and patterns A few different color variants of chameleons feeding with cherries and caridina typus. Oh and i think I've posted some other pictures of chameleons too, just type chameleon into the search engine
luckyfish
Thanks guys for all your help, I have 4 spare tanks set up for the native shrimps but may have to get more tanks as I'm placing another order fr different varities...when will the madness end. I have filled the tanks, leaving them to sit for a week and hopefully they will do the trick. Also going to start my own cultures and try to give them the food they would receive in the wild. Also going to make some small slate moss huts, so there's extra yumminess from the moss for the fry to eat
