ricksfish
Males have a weenie fin for the anal fin and the girls have a flat fin. Its the same for all live bearers.

Kim : RPC
so are most platies from the LFS females then? Not usually, when I order them we get a good mix of males and females.
leah
Google image "platy male and female". There's some handy pics there that might help you.
Pet_City
The females have a standard fishy shape and the fin close the "fish butt" looks like a triangle - a normal fin. They are also typically a little bigger and broader. Males have a fin near their bum that looks spiky and they can't an it out into a triangle. They are also the ones that seem to chase the other fish the most and "harass" the larger fish This is why we suggest its better to harem a livebearer - 2 females for every male. One gets harassed while one gets a break Tough life hey?

Pet_City
As far as I am aware (and man can science be a *****!) Swords and platys can interbreed but not platys and guppies. They are a different genus (same family)
Pet_City
Its all about the triangle. You make me smile - this is the first lesson we all learn when working in the aquarium trade. I remember my first mentor Tim, drawing it in Sharpie on the tank. I now draw the fins for customers Thank you for the nostalgia
DeadFishFloating
Guppies and mollies can interbreed. Its all about locks and keys and ya if it dont fit it dont happen. very similar for almost all livebearers. except sharks and coelacanth

gingerbeer
Yes I read somewhere once that Guppies and Mollies can interbreed.Apparently they're called Gollies or Muppets or something like that LOL So Gonzo is a hybrid????? All livebearers start of looking female and having fins, the gonopodius develops and at times females are reported as changing to male as they can be misID'd.
