Moral / Ethical Dilema

Recommended Posts

Hey all

Just yesterday I decided to remove the Persei from my display tank as he was waaaay to big. At least a foot long.

Here's my issue, In Mackay the hobby is small, so is hard to rehome a lage fish.

As luck would have it, the local LFS guy took it ( I think for his display ). Often, I have to "euthanise" fish to be humane.

So ......... Last night I made another bunch of home brew fish tucker. Do ya think I would have been doing the right thing if I had "euthanised" him and ground him up into the home brew tucker ...... or would that jus be gross .. It kinda works for me but Mrs Mackayman an Lil Mrs Mackayman reckon I'm jus heartless.

I dunno, at least he would have been giving back to the community ?

What's your thoughts ?

Brendan

ha ha either ways a winner...things die..get absorbed by the earth....plants thrive...more animals chomp em down..part of the cycle...so trade him or use for free feed..all part of the same game ;) inhumane to me is not killing him quickly or letting him suffer a horrible fate... ;) maybe you can serve up rare american fish for dinner :)

attachment is the thing for me with fish. i breed some american spp. and when small if they dont sell i simply convert them into dovii poo (well the dovii does the conversion i just organise the meeting ;) ) i look at it in simple terms, when i raise a fish to adulthood i get used to and appreciate its behaviour and the way they react with me. if i walk into the fish shed or living room and the fish see me they engage and go to the feeding corner expecting a treat. if the missus or kids walk in the for the most part are ignored except for the red devil which seems to thoroughly enjoy try to kill them and then splash water all over the place. its definately an ethical and moral choice and a choice that can only be made by the keeper of the animal. plenty of people raise cows, pigs and chickens...... and even aquaculture for the benifits of the protein not the benifits of the animal (though they do benifit short term). i place fish carcases in the compost and whilst technically againt the compost rules the worms and bacteria seem to break them down and the fish i keep in turn eat the worms so.................

on a side note re the fish food mix....... ever think of the addition of duckweed? yes the fish will eat it as a floating plant but it is 93% water. if dried and added to the mix the nutrition content is a little different and you do need a pond or dam for effective cultivation but

typical figures wet and dry

protein 6.8 — 45.0

lipid 1.8 — 9.2

crude fiber 5.7 — 16.2

carbohydrate 14.1 — 43.6

ash 12.0 — 27.6
