Well the entire area lost power last night after I went to bed only noticed this morning when I got up for work as it was still off lost the entire contents from one tank and some fish from other tanks consisting of 6 peppermint b/n that were breeding 2 orange spot b/n about 300 endler guppies approx 500 cherry shrimp 3 long fin marble b/n 2 common b/n and 4 albino b/n as well as all my baby b/n

After the power problems on the weekend then waking to this I'm seriously thinking about throwing the towel in what's worse is energex didn't even offer anything to keep me as a customer

Hey mate sorry for your loss, I'd wanna throw in the towel too if I was In your position.. I lost a $1000 Thai silk flowerhorn, quite devestated at that, I kinda had a thought about selling up too. However it gave me a chance to start with something else. Just keep at it mate, I'm happy to give you some cherry shrimp for free as its all I can offer as I don't keep anything small, don't have fry I could either. Just something that can keep you in the hobby :)

Sorry to hear about your losses.

I'm working on a project atm to prevent losses due to no oxygen when there is a power failure.

I plan to run four battery powered air pumps wired in series (4x3volts=12v) off a 12v deep cycle battery that is constantly charged off a solar panel. There will be a 240v relay with contacts that close (normally closed) when 240v power is lost. There should be enough power to run the pumps for at least 2 days. May even run a 600w inverter off it instead to run my 240v heater and air pump instead.

Good insurance for storm season.

Woah I'm surprised that you lost cherry shrimp. I noticed some in a bucket outside which had to have been there for the whole of the winter. Tough little critters. Sorry for your loss.

Cherry shrimp doesn't die because of cold but they die if it getting over 30+ degree. They love cold but not too good at hot.

Sorry to hear your losses adamski84

Sorry for your loss.

Something that always amazes me is that people have extensive/expensive/large collections/heavily stocked set ups or fish that can not easily be replaced yet have no back up plan for power loss. Generators are relatively cheap to buy, mine has paid for itself 10 times over in one summer storm season alone.

There's a app for your phone that will sound a alarm and wake you if you lose power ! Then just get your self a genny and you will never have any problems again.. iPhone app =$2.99 genny =$300 iv lost power 20+ times this year and never lost power to the fish room more than 20 min (yes the fridge was of for almost 2 days once and the wife almost killed me but the fish room was fine :) )

sorry for ur loss bud, not good

i use sponge filters in all my tanks as well as externals, i have one air pump to run whole system, and a small generator on hand for such instances, bit hard when ur not aware of the power out, but with the storm season upon us, we have to have a backup plan

That's fine if all you need is air. What about a chiller/heater? My idea will run all these things, fully automated. Will a generator start itself??

I believe you can set up to do that if you know what you doing but I'm not an electrician so I really don't know the way to do it.
