Scuba Steve
ok picked up a tank with a crack for free from a friend. ive patched the crack but not sure wether it will be alright or not. its hard to explain so i have drawn a picture to try explain. the piece is siliconed on the outside if it helps. so what do you guys think. will it be alright? cheers, steve
Scuba Steve
it is cracked from one of the dodgy bulkhead holes to the top. the blue is the piece of glass i applied. the tank itself is a 3x18x18.
shon982
I would've siliconed it inside the tank... I've got some glass you can have to patch it up Come over and I can cut it to size... But then again it could be fine, just thinking if water is pushing from inside the tank, the patching piece would've been better inside the tank to take the force rather than maybe making the crack bigger p.s. my first thought about this thread was maybe there's a drug problem
Scuba Steve
haha i submitted the thread and thought the exact same thing. lol. i think i might cut another piece and put on the inside aswell ust to be safe. cheers shon

Fish Junkie
There's little to no pressure that high up on a tank the patch on the outside is fine FJ
Betta
Yep, definitely put the new piece on the inside, a lot stronger that way or if I have your thread header wrong I suggest you head down the valley, lol
Scuba Steve
cheers fj, i was thinking the same, plus by putting the patch on the outside i just painted that side black so you can barely notice it from the outside and the mirror effect means you cant see it from the inside.... Predator Rob
Hey steve, Is the tank in display quality? if so think about replacing the glass and re drilling it? ( which is quite easy to do ) also all patches should be done on the inside of tha tank as this stops water entering the crack and delaminating the patch, which i have seen happin a few times. Scuba Steve
hey rob, no the tank is just goint to be used for a breeding/growout tank, dosent really matter on looks. might put a patch over the inside tonight just to be safe. and just to reiterate guys, its the kinda crack you get in glass. Fish Junkie
Is the crack from the hole up to the top of tank ? I take it from the large patch it might be down and across. If so does it go to the end of the panel The worst crack would be one that's cracked and stopped. Just like a windscreen over time the crack will travel better off cracking it till it stops at the panels end then fixing IMO that patch as it is will last a lot longer than the tank so I would leave it FJ
Scuba Steve
the tank is cracked from the bulkhead hole up to the top on probably a 45 degree angle. its cracked the same as the second pic on the op. the only reason the patch is so big is because i got lazy and didnt want to try find my glass cutter. im not using those bulkhead holes either im using two that are at the other end of the tank if that helps. Fish Junkie
Ok then what you have done will outlive the tank There's no pressure that high up No need to do anymore unless you want to FJ
Betta
and just to reiterate guys, its the kinda crack you get in glass. LOL That doesn't clear it up at all, I may be naive but isn't the bad kind of crack used in glass? Lmao
