goldenswimmers
Been away from the goldfish game too long so was only a matter of time til I got back into it...so have now set myself up with a nice new display and a bunch of big sexy orandas(5 blacks and 1 blue) plus a nice little throw back ranchu complete with dorsal fin(chu-da )to add to the mix...so heres the new set up using different sizes of black substrate and sand(plus a couple of baby bannana lillies to grow out and add some extra nature to the mix;)).... ..excuse the murkiness..its a brand new set up and is just starting to settle down Edited November 21, 2012 by goldenswimmers
goldenswimmers
Yep I have used SAND.. I was anti-sand for a while believing the "bad for the gills" hype etc....but figured with oranda who dont dig like the ranchu do it shouldn't be such an issue plus how many rivers have sandbeds..quite a few.. and hearing from a very reputable breeder overseas figured it was time to give it a go... goldenswimmers
will keep this thread updated as the tank clears and gets established with more bannana lillies(also might add some nice wood pieces with moss all over )..reckon the sand adds a nice look but thinks its going to be fun come cleaning time which could be often with the poo machines
steve6610
well about time i was thinking how its just not right for our goldy expert to have no goldys, i still have about 15/20 of your guys growing, you know where they are if you ever get the urge to breed a few later on,
Scuba Steve
looks great. cant wait to see it when it all clears. I myself find sand easier to clean once you get the hang of it.
Betta
Again I've been thrown by the thread header, I thought it was an off topics discussion about Justin Timberlake or even about the little marine shrimp known as sexy shrimp, anyhoo very nice setup Brent, the landscape look awesome, very Japanese

netty_3164
Neat simple setup. Lovely black orandas too Just a thought of mine: Where's the setup located in the house? I personally can't stand the noise of air pumps and like to use internal or canisters to keep noise at a minimum. I guess it could help create more of that tranquil open river feel as you mentioned? goldenswimmers
Its near the kitchen and its pretty quiet..maybe a light "hummmmmmm" I'd say i will be switching this over to a decent canister or even sump for extra filtration...and less work ..and more the look..this will be a display tank so best to not see the legendary "spongeys" in the tank...being black I just placed them on the rows of black pebbles so it wouldnt be so obvious.. I can still hear the bubbles but the eheim air pumps are near silent , also they have really soft silicon feet so they don't vibrate on the surface they are sitting on. goldenswimmers
yep still bringing back the love(and recovering from the oranda massacre of 2012)...so heres some pics of the new ranchu.... As per usual always have to aim at a nice smooth back curve but have also been a bit fortunate to get some guys with small tails and some great colours...the orange and black is really nice and having the black on some of the lower levels of scales(not just the outside layer) means it will be stable...this is what they call a tiger ranchu so would be nice to secure this colour pattern on some offspring...maybe cross with a black to aim at some orange "speckles" on a black colour base & would look the goods me thinks also a nice sakura coloured guy(but has a little black on his tail so not a pure sakura)but he has the the nice "layered" colouring and has great headgrowth so should be a little gem...
