Calvus holding - what do I need to do?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm new to breeding as have always had an all male peacock tank with my black calvus in with them but recently decided to bite the bullet and convert to a 100% tang tank.

I originally had 3 large Calvus but traded an aggressive female for a smaller one and since the aggressive girl and peacocks have been removed my other 2 calvus are inseparable. I know one is definitely a female and always suspected the other to be male but now they have the tank to them self I am even more sure as they are showing all the signs of paring up.

Anyway, for the last two days my female has been hiding behind the rocks at the back of the tank and shows no interest in eating which makes me think she is holding.

Do I just leave them alone or will they eat their own eggs? Also have 2 small gold comps and a blue occie in there but it's one big happy family :)

Do you have shells in there? XL hermit shells are best I have a couple spare if you need any.

I've always known them to be a cave or rock spawners, females will 'cave' and males will keep females close to or in shell when breeding.

Once they have laid, she will guard them until they hatch, after a few days she will back out of the spawn site but never far from opening and will be interested in food but still guarding the fry.

When she comes out for food a few times I usually grab the shell with fry and remove to a fry saver or tank with same parameters as parents.

If you leave them in there the parents will try to guard them but there will be a lot of fry and they don't school like most egg layers so harder to protect.

x2, best to remove fry and your other gold comp

Thanks Stacey, I only have the shells I use for my Occie but they show no interest in them.

she is hiding at the back of the rocks/ caves and went to come out this morning but the boy made her go back in. He is happy cruising around and not protective just makes her stay there.

if there are eggs I think they are in a place I can not see well as all rocks etc.

I will keep an eye on them for the next day or so and watch them closely (feel like a stalker)
