The Tech Den
Personally would go the K1 Probably put coarse sponge then fine sponge then filter wool. If you put fine in too early it gets a bit mucked up and requires cleaning sooner. So the heavier particles get caught in the coarse smaller get caught in the fine and the small particles get caught in the wool. Bit of escoria would not go a stray either. Scuba Steve
jeesus man, 2 10,000 lt pumps? how bigs the system its doing?
Scuba Steve
i agree with Tech, i have 1 small layer of jap matt on top and then start with my fine sponge and gradually get courser. This also helps greatly with the sound as i find the jap matt quieten's the water flowing in alot especially when running such big pumps.
a-f-a
Haha it's prity big they will service two 6000 l systems i am /was going to place foam and wool in the first bay under the drip tray but am unsure of what to do to the fourth bay i agree the foam in various braiding is a must for a sump and will help to keep it clear of debris well help anyways
goldenswimmers
yes nice water for the beasts :).. you'd think K1 int here would be really nice but pricey and yep sponge layers of different coarseness would have to be a winner tynevalleyaquatics are some guys on ebay and they have some super media.... a-f-a
ywh i was leaning towards ki but how much would i need to uterlise a 600x450 chamber also how big is the k1 as i would put a mesh on the botom of the partition so it stays put
The Tech Den
You would have to be able to fit probably up to 20 plus liters of K1 I would guess at. I am just picturing 2 liter milk containers 6 on top of 6 should cover about a third of the area you mentioned which would be plenty. You could also put in another divider and have K1 in one and then have Macropore or Carbon or something as final water treatment at the end? guest 11
ywh i was leaning towards ki but how much would i need to uterlise a 600x450 chamber also how big is the k1 as i would put a mesh on the botom of the partition so it stays put K1 fits through egg crate, I cut my egg crate to size then ziptied gutter guard to it,
anthonydeMarchi
10-25mm zeolite (100% water penetration at that size, any bigger you loose penetration) for me but i keep soft water fish although i do have a troheus and some electric yellows (yeh im an expert at africans lol) in the system doing well and the coral will already be your buffer against it ever going soft. zoggy
Where do you get K1 media for $80/100L? Age of Aquariums has 50L for $195 and they are usually pretty good on prices. Cheers, Dave.
zoggy
That's all well and good, bit misleading for the rest of us though. Keen to know if anybody finds a better price, excluding mates rates of course
goldenswimmers
guess thats why they call it the sunshine coast ...as they say its not what you know...still reckon it helps to know a little bit
zoggy
I still fail to see the point of bragging about how cheap you can get something through a friend/neighbour unless you intend passing that saving on to everyone else. But anyway... If this K1 is as efficient as they reckon it it, then I'd certainly look at incorporating that into the sump, it'll be streets ahead of gutter guard for surface area regardless. I'm looking at modifying my sump so I can run 15 litres or so. Cheers, Dave.
goldenswimmers
nothing wrong with sharing a good deal..even if its just the info... how many litres of K1 would you need for a sump(section) like this one Chris is setting up?..... zoggy
How would you keep the K1 suspended in the last chamber? I've seen air stones siliconed to the base and used to keep them suspended. Pretty sure that's the way I'll end up going.
a-f-a
well the water enters from the top of the bay and leaves through the botom on the other side there is going to be 20 000l going through aprox and this will create a circular motion in the ba as there wont be anthing heavy with the k1 to block flow to the water will be a horizontal whirl pool i supose
The Tech Den
There was some good discussion on weather to have the K1 in the first or the last compartment. You do not really need to silicon the airstones in - they should stay in place and if you want you just use the air line suction cups. That way when they get clogged it is easy enough to sort out. One of the systems here I have got it where no air is used and just runs off of one pump and have K1 and works fine.
