steve6610
i'm currently moving my bn out of their winter home, to cut back on heating i had 2 ibc's set up on a sump, i put all my bn into them to grow and rest over winter, now i've got my breeding tanks up and ready i'm slowly removing the bn, i'm most likely going to sell off a few and just keep enough to fill my breeding tanks, my question is, what to put into the ibc's until next winter, i also have another 1 i can set up, i was thinking about using them to grow out my bn fry, but i still have several extra 3 to 6 ft tanks i can use for this, gold fish, guppies and cherry shrimp are out as i already have a couple other ibc's set up with these in them, i'm looking for something different, thinking i might try to buy some bulk african fry and put them into the ibc's to grow, i miss my africans, don't really want to do americans, but the other issue is i will need to be able to tell the difference between them when it comes to sorting them out, so i'm thinking i either need all 1 type, or maybe a couple types that are totally different in males and females to each other, any ideas
goneself
Nanacara Anomala..pretty, easy to breed, hardy, not many around, and dammit, I need some more females! Otherwise maybe have a go at breeding some egg scatterers- tetras, barbs danios, etc etc..doesn't seem to be many of those floating around either, should sell well. Betta
Haha, I wonder if anyone can guess what I'm going to suggest, yep try some Betta Macrostomas or their baby brother Betta Chanoides, they're both mouthbrooders & you can grow the fry out with the parents in the same tank with multiple spawns, also you can keep multiple males in the same tank, especially a tank that big wilds are cool

steve6610
thanks for the ideas so far, i'm more just thinking about buying bulk small african fry, but this seems interesting, maybe have a go at breeding some egg scatterers- tetras, barbs danios, etc etc sorry betta, i can't see myself using an ibc's for a pair of fighters grubby, i have some rainbows in with my gold fish, i'm not sure how it would go with buying the fry to grow, i really don't want to turn them into breeding tanks, i'd rather look at buying bulk cheap african fry, even 1cm or under, maybe go a shiver me timbers load of quality peacocks..... now thats what i'm thinking about, or maybe a couple different types,
Betta
sorry betta, i can't see myself using an ibc's for a pair of fighters Oooooohhhhh, thems fightin words, lol Wilds are a whole different ball game, as I mentioned you can keep multiple males & females in the one tank & they won't touch the fry, even multiple spawns but I understand, you don't want to breed just use them as grow out tanks then Africans are probably the way to go
steve6610
sorry, i really have no idea about "wilds" will they cost me much, do the fry sell, are they easy to breed, do i need anything special to breed them,

Betta
sorry, i really have no idea about "wilds" will they cost me much, do the fry sell, are they easy to breed, do i need anything special to breed them, Haha, all good! You can get Chanoides for about $30 a pair & Macrostomas for about $50 - $75 each, although you can pay upto $300 a pair. Macs are harder to breed & Chanoides are like rabbits when they get going. You don't need anything special, just clean water like any other & you might want to get some Indian Almond Leaf & some floating plants. steve6610
been awhile since i posted this thread, thought i'd update it a little, we have now moved all the breeding bn back into their summer homes and things are doing really well, so that leaves me with a spare ibc or 2, i have been looking for something to put in them, the searching has now finished, i'm going to stock them with something i've never owned, well not knowingly yes, i've buying hybrids, lots of them, yes i may have some types of hybrids in certain eyes, eg: guppies, endlers, bn, i'm going to get some nice sexy peacock hybrids, a mix of dragonblood, lemons, ob and some splits, looking forward to having some nice african fry again to raise and so i can pick out some nice colonys and display males,
