Stunning LFS Display

Recommended Posts

I was in a LFS yesterday buying some food for my boys and girls when my attention was grabbed by a flash of bright orange. I wandered over to the tank to see an absolutely stunning coral cod. Very quickly afterwards I spotted the equally stunning port jackson shark, which of course was only briefly before I saw the gorgeous lionfish swimming around at the back of the tank. I took a quick look at the inventory, conveniently written on the side of the tank and noticed there was also supposed to be a wobbegong in there. My first thought was that someone had bought it - wrong, wrong, wrong! It was hiding out in the open, the port jackson shark was in fact laying across it. The most amazing fish of the 4 had some of the best camouflage going on, it was flawless and blended in so well with the bottom of the tank.

I love going into LFSs and finding little gems like this. The LFS is a little bit of a surprise too, it's in it's own building on the grounds of a nursery, and I had no idea it was there until about 4 months ago yet it's only 10 minutes from home. All the stock looks nice and healthy too and quite a large range.

Well done LFS.

The fellow I spoke with wasn't the most knowledgeable with cichlids but I get the feeling he was more a marine man. He was however very professional and looked for the correct answers for me. Still happy and I'll be going back.

Well I suppose I've seen plenty of posts talking up how good Smith's are on the north side. The place is called Nielsen's Marine Mates and it's on the grounds of Nielsen's Native Nursery at Loganholme. They have a website with their address on it so Google can be your friend there.

Excellent. Just wanted to clarify before I said anything, but YES Nielsen's Marine Mates in my opinion are the best saltwater shop going around Brisbane. Ben (if he is still there) is an incredibly knowledgable young guy. And Smith's would definitely be their freshwater counterpart overall (again... in my opinion)

I live near neilsons too:) great little Lfs ..

Just to be clear,

Members are welcome to mention a shop in a good light just as Geoff has done. He hasn't posted links or tried to advertise for them.. I cant see a problem with saying hey a saw a pretty tank :)

Thanks Mat, appreciate the heads up. To be honest though I wasn't even spruking, the posting was more about the experience I had with that tank and how each of the 4 fish in it grabbed my attention in different ways culminating in the awesome camouflage of the wobbegong, which I must have looked straight at when I was looking at the PJS but it blended into the substrate so well I completely overlooked it. My thought in posting this was to hear of other people's stories and the gems they had found in other LFSs, those tanks that give you whiplash as you walk past because they had X Y and Z fish in it or they had some amazing piece of driftwood that looked like Lisa Simpson's Sax-a-ma-phone.

There's a shopping centre at Southport that has a marine tank that must be 7 or 8 foot long by 2 foot wide by 2.5-3 foot high, great coral and rockwork and the fish are constantly changed. They regularly have starfish in it and for a few months they had the most awesome looking unicorn fish in it.
