Ross Boughen
Hey I've been doing a lot of research into diy canisters and I'm thinking about trying my hand at making one is there anyone that has done this and can give me some pointers like what's the best pump material etc
DeadFishFloating
My advice is only do it for the experience. you likely wont save cash too easy to get a $100 cannister brand new these days
Ross Boughen
That's the predicament I'm in I don't have the spare cash but in need for the filtration I have pumps pvc piping valves etc just looking to see if anyone has any knowledge with this
__CAV__
It's easy as I've made a few in my time using both 100mm and 150mm piping, Normally I put my inlet down low and have my outlet up high. I use a 90deg bend (irrigation fitting) as my outlet with it setup so one side of the fitting sits inside the poly draining water from the top, it's hard to explain but when I get home from work today i'll grab some pics for you and whack them up so you can see it. DeadFishFloating
Its easier if it doesnt have to be under pressure. The low tech "above tank" style filters that are so popular in Asia maybe an alternative. They are very easy to DIY compared to a cannister. Heres a version of what I am talking about Age of Aquariums - HY304D ( 1000lph )
Matmatmat
What dff said^^^^ in Asia heaps of guys use these super cheap simple trickle filters.. Easy and cheap to make.. Just pump water up and let it fall through the media into the tank..
trofius
I have done a 50L cansiter before, worked awsome, but was a pain in the ass, was big and ugly. and had occasional pressure issues. I have also done the above tank trickle filter, was heaps easier, very effective at mechanical filtration, and way cheaper.! takes up no extra space beside tank. lochdan
Could take the suggested low pressure approach recommended above and have some fun improvising on media. I'm thinking a aquarium mini-aquaponic set up would make an interesting project ...... If only I had the pumps ,PVC, and valves
