Anthony123
. . Pretty new to l's picked these guys up at a petshop as l002 they're about 15-18months old heading on 7cms from my research I believe I've got 3 males due to all looking as though theyve got hairy Tails unless females also get them and all noses looking more pointed, lemme know what the experts think cheers Anthony
Sephiroth
When i had my colony of 104's, the males had a crap load more hairs than that. But you can really see any hairs with these pics. 2 of them do have broad and rounder snouts, that may mean something... Seph

pk333
Not that I know anything about L's, but is it possible there are two different species here? The top fish in the top photo, (it's the middle fish in the second photo) looks more like a L397 to me. It has different facial squiggles and cleaner body stripes than the other two. tubbi
Looks like 2 male 002's and a male 397 could do with a little fattening up, I could be wrong
Braddo
Im with pk on this. The spacing and even shape of the barring is different. Unfortunately in l numbers it is these slight differences that differs in some species/variants.

Anthony123
Thanks guys had always thought one was different watching them grow just thought I'd get other opinions as I said pretty new to l's
pk333
Well Anthony you are sort of in luck. L397 is a bit more expensive than L002. If you can find a LFS or hobbyist that stocks both species, you might be able to trade your male L397 for a female L002. And with L's you're better off having a reverse trio of one female and two males, rather than a traditional trio of one male and two females. beencees
Well sorry but i'll go against the trend. Only my opinion but i definately believe they are all L002's. Two of them do not have particularly good markings is all. Alot of people make the mistake of believing different (finer lines) on the face means they are L397's but that is definately not true. When you see a 397 next to a 002 there is no mistaking them. First 2 pics L397 (currently for sale), second 2 are L002's They do get easier to tell apart as they mature. As for sexing, if you are able to get some clear vent shots it would make it easier Edited December 27, 2012 by beencees
pk333
I don't mind being corrected if I am wrong. Like I said, I don't know L's. I was hopping some of the more experienced L keepers would have jumped in before now. Glad of your input beencees.
Anthony123
Thanks for that beencees I will try and get some vent shots but I might leave them for a day as had them out for the past 2 days don't like to stress them too much, also will take them on the camera and wait till I get round the old ladies to use he pc swear pics on iPhone are horrible and misleading lol believe I do have 3 males would just like tO sort out whether I got what I paid for, both discoloured Ones come good once in the tank just stressed in the pics that particular one definitely has a different personality to the other two and looking at them side by side by side it has at least 10x finer lines on the face although a couple of bourbons have been sunk
