Azedenkae
Wild (caught) and golden oscars are in Australia. Not sure about lemon. The 'super red' is just a product of in-/line-/selective breeding for the reddest oscars.
kingcasper
Oh okay thanks for the info I was amazed when i seen the pictures on google of the super red because of how RED it really is.. maybe they turned up the color or something but it just seemed way to red
Azedenkae
Well it's possible that oscars can be that red in nature, but the super reds in the hobby atm comes from Asian breeders, for which basically the reddest individuals are selected and breed for more and more red until tada, super red! kingcasper
and its possible to buy a super red in qld ?
Azedenkae
Don't think so, never seen one in Qld before. You could always just import directly from overseas. Or go through someone like Jodi-Lea @ fishchick.

63off
Did some checking (happy to be proven wrong) and it seems the super red variant is a result of a condition called amelanism. It's a bit like albinism except that it's a lack of melanin pigment so all the red pigment takes over. Singapore seems to be the go, as is the Philippines where they do a lot of line breeding for amazing coloured fish. Good luck with them.

Mhm, I believe so as well, Red Oscars are just those lacking black pigment. Somewhere along the way someone selectively breed these for less and less black pigment and 'better' and 'better' red coloration to end up with 'Super' Red Oscars. 63off
To be honest I think I prefer the good old tiger oscar myself. Just love colour variations and different patterns. Apparently the red ones either aren't successful at breeding other red ones or they're not successful breeders at all. Not sure why you'd go for one of these over say a red devil, which is far easier to come by.

Though of course, 'perfection' in parentheses because everybody regards perfection differently. Then again, I just find oscars butt-ugly full stop. Have never even considered getting one. The long fin varieties are quite nice-ish (seen one with my own eyes, the fins looked amazing). But then I keep on seeing its face and the face just keeps on ruining it for me. :/ Whyyyy can't those beautiful fins be on something like a Convict. ( So to each their own I guess. I could watch them all day I like "different" and these rare(er) kinds of oscars would suit me very well if only I could find them
