So very many questions...

Recommended Posts

...which I won't post here. But I will say hello and be a good forum citizen.

Just got a 6 foot tank with timber stand and canister (under gravel) filter/pump and two other pumps and stuff... for $400. I think I did OK.

But now I got to populate it and make it all work. Which is why I'm here. Coz I know f--- all. And I think I'll go for an unheated tank with natives and loads of plants.

I live in the Cooloola Coast region. Quite a nice part of the world. Hope you are having a great time. Keep getting wet.

Welcome to the forum, just wanted to check you know about cycling your tank before putting fish in? Just want to get an idea of how much knowledge f*** all is? Have you ever owned fish before? Everyone here is more than happy to answer any questions you have, we just need as much info as possible. :egrin: Anyhoo, hope you have fun on the forum :egrin:

Yes, I do know about cycling water. Thank you for asking. Makes me feel well looked after. I have had some fish before in tanks (guppies n stuff). But Favourites were Pacific Blue-eyes in a pond I made from a tractor tire. They were great fun to sit and watch. Males flashing about. Birds couldn't get them because I didn't cut the wall of the tire off. They just ducked under. They lived entirely off the pond life.

Deadfishfloating...I'm having trouble identifying the lighting. Best I can get is one of the tubes says T5 HO' 80W/W1000K. The other appears to be a black light.

T5 is what ya want!

The combo of one white one, and one blue one, is very cool for making fish colours pop and water look crisp and clean.

But for planting, you want something with more focus on the red part of the spectrum.

So I would replace the (looks like a black light one) actinic, with some form of grow tube.

Depending on the age of the white one, it might be worth replacing it too. Keep the old bulbs as spares, in case ya blow one and cant get to shop for a bit.

Now get some pictures up!

Lets see what ya got to work with mate

Photos. Yes...quite. How rude of me.

Big freakin canister filter (Aquanics 1600)

Those there are the tubes in the lighting.

That would be a 6 foot tank (you can see light on top).

And I've got two of those internal powerhead pumps. Both have the plastic back broken off. I think they'll be fine with a bit of Silicone. I want to figure out how to use them for circulation/aeration.

The tank is sitting in a weird spot but I think it's going to look awesome from the lounge room. It'll be right behind our heads as we sit on the lounge watching videos etc. It'll also be a central night light for the whole house (small beach shack).

There's also a timber lid to the whole thing. A little weather beaten but it does the job. And fits the rest of the weather beaten decor.

So yeah...she's a blank tank at the mo'.

Don't know where the heck I'm going to get enough gravel/sand for the bottom of it. Aquarium/pet stores want at wee bit too much.

Cheers.

Oh and I forgot to mention...and now I feel a bit stupid. Because I didn't include a piece of my relevant past. I did do a course in Aquaculture and have had a small bit of fish/water-plant farming experience. As well as being an ecologist and other stuff.

The reason I didn't include earlier was I actually, for a moment, thought it wasn't relevant.

Cheers everyone. Very active forum. You must all be nutbags. And fair enough.

Yea that counts as a good score!

You can do great things with this setup.

Keep in mind location, so prob best to have a quiet running tank.

Its easier to have less fish and so less need for aggressive aeration.

And no cheap noisey airpump!

Have you given the aquanic cannister a clean out?

basically thats the most important bit of kit you need to check over and get running.

Once you have a cycled cannister filter you can pretty much start stocking.

Do you understand how to fill cannister filter with water before turning it on?

Thats probably the main thing.

Dual t5 is not a bad light for most med light plants.

New bulbs cost depends on brand and type.

Certainly worth looking into a replacement bulb, or better both.

Better luck with most plants, if ya replace the blue with a grow tube.

Its not the cheapest, but it awesome

The powerheads look like cheap resun ones. Not really worth repairing.

I would bin them, say a few words and move on with life.

:D

Once you have an idea of the fish stock, you can work out how powerful in lph you need powerheads to be.

You have to clean powerheads all the time, so you want to get a good one.

Something easy to clean, that can handle being maintained without BREAKING.

I prefer the german style powerheads, otto, eheim and tunze

Dont worry about the gravel/sand until you work out what fish you want.

Then decide if its a biotype or a display.

Then make sure its gonna look good.

Then get it.

You do fit the profile for a native fish keeper then.

:D

What water plants did you farm?

I am waiting to hear ya say rice, but hoping it was anubias.

most skill sets come in handy in this hobby.

thats why after photography its arguably the largest hobby.

A tank is just an experiment, and its a choose yer own difficulty one.

Its one thing to know how an animal lives in the wild.

its another to know how to simulate that environment

in a way that takes very little effort to keep it and the livestock healthy.

less effort and more enjoyment = a hobby

more effort and less enjoyment = a job

tricks of da trade

and methods of the mind.

It's clean. I'm starting to understand how to set it up with media thanks to your advice in other thread.

Dearly beloved. We have gathered here today to return these powerheads to their creator....bla bla bla...[lights candle]...bla bla bla...[throws powerheads over right shoulder into awaiting receptacle]...Amen.

I'm leaning towards biotype. I remember seeing a series of biotypes used to recycle household water. Fascinated me. So I'm kinda seeing a tank with small fish (probably Rainbows, Blue-eyes, and the odd Gourami), shrimp, snails, muscles (if it's possible to find them), log, rocks and plants.

I helped to manage a Chinampa System Chinampas Gardens Midwest Permaculture which looked a little like this.

We had Taro, Kang Kong, Lotus, Water Lilly, Water Chestnuts, along the water edges and Ducks and Geese and chickens and Three Sisters crops on the land. It was a big system that never quite got into full production because the place was entirely run by volunteers. And Ducks. Never let ducks run an organisation.
