Gringox
Hi all I have a 4'x18"x18" with two 10" red oscars. I would really like to just have one red devil. I would much prefer to get a small fish and watch it grow than buy a fully grown one. My question is, would a 3-4" devil survive with the two large oscars? I have had a devil before so I know how feisty they can be even when young, so I think he would be ok. I just don't want to have a small fish on it's own in a 250L tank. I would like for him to grow to around 7 or 8" or so, then sell the oscars and just have the one red devil. Daharkazangel
IMHO that tank cant house two oscars...let alone a red devil too, just sell the oscars straight up and go the devil by himself . Whats the filtration? (i say that in the nicest way ) Edited January 17, 2013 by Daharkazangel
Gringox
Yeah I didn't particularly want the oscars, they came with the tank so like I said, I would rather just have the one fish. Currently have an 1800L/hr internal and a 500L/hr HOB but will be upgrading shortly. I just want to have the devil in with the oscars for a couple of months until the devil grows a bit. Daharkazangel
Id say it would be risky with O's that big. See what others say
Gringox
Yeah might be a bit risky I know. The oscars get on pretty well but wouldn't want the poor little fellar getting picked on or eaten.
goneself
Oscars are piscavores. They love small fish, but only briefly.
Azedenkae
Yeah you can keep the Red Devil in the tank. Otherwise chances are the oscars will try to eat it when it's small or it'll kill the oscars when it gets bigger. But given that you're aiming for a 3"-4", it very well could be fine, but do try to get a 4" or more nonetheless.
Gringox
Yeah that's what I was thinking. Might get a 4 or 5 inch and see how he goes. If not he can go in the 3' tank until the oscars go. Next question is do we know anyone in Brisbane with cheap red devils?
Azedenkae
Yes but not often (more so due to the size). I see lotsa 20-30cm RDs around, but rarely 10cm-ish. Try Fish Master Marvelous @ Paddington (his stuff is relatively cheap), or some of the facebook sites. Last I check Aquarama also has some. I think. Azedenkae
Lol yeah I thought 400L was bigger than what you should have but was too sleepy to really think too deeply into it. Anyways no worries, glad to be of help. Btw just wondering, what makes you interested in Red Devils in particular? There's the more or less monochromatic ones that are orange or pink or whatever, but also a creamsicle variety that has a more mottled look to it. Depending, you might be interested in getting one of those two varieties in particular.
