Its actually quite complicated, and indeed a subject many very smart people have devoted their lives too.

Well yes, but more so with how specific animals actually react to specific types of pain, as opposed to that pain can be felt by what animals. Because iirc even the most 'basic' animals have the ability to react to stimuli that causes 'pain', i.e. they can feel it.

But yes, the reactions themselves are so much more intriguing.

When I was a kid I saw a live mud crab dropped in a boiling pot of water and I can say that he most deffinetly felt pain. It was disturbing to see it thrashing around, obviously cause I can still recall it 20 years later. ( Personally I prefer them cleaned and cracked thrown in in pieces with a bit of white wine and garlic.) ;)
