Help with my fish behaviour

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Just wondering if anyone could help me. I got a mangrove jack about 4 months ago for my brackish set up. He is about 15-17cm long and is in with a barra of similar size. The jacks are ment to be an agro fish and a awesome feeding fish. At feed time my barra dominates and my jack looks so timid. He eats pilchard chuncks off the bottom that the barra doesnt eat. I was told my jack would smash his food as soon as it hits the water. He is the opposite. Just wondering if this is normal for a juvie jack and will he get more agro as he matures? And how can i make him aggro like people say they are?

Thanks Joel

I have never fed the pilllies, if they don't get eaten they stink and stinking water can't be good. try a peeled green prawn or a few pieces ince the barra is full,he might come out of his shell if he was by himself, possibly a bit intimidated by the barra and the way they smash food.

I agree with mq. I don't feed pillies either. I find they create too much mess and unneeded bioload on your system. Do you have a decent local bait shop that supplies fresh caught supplies(not frozen). I can get fresh mullet fillet here for $6kg, fresh whole squid $10kg, whitebait $7kg,hardyheads etc, the list goes on. The mob I use get a lot of there stuff daily and it is much cheaper than frozen supermarket food. Raw prawns from the supermarket are fine but much pricier. As for being a little timid, I'd say give it some more time and let it gain some more size.

Okay good idea i will have a look around for fresh bait from tackle shops. And i will most likely sell my barra because he just dominates feed time. And i want my jack to be aggressive as they are ment to be. So ill give him some time alone and see how he goes. Thanks Joel

Mate, you live at Caloundra. There has gotta be a seafood shop there somewhere that sells fresh seafood. I dare say you would pay higher prices at a bait and tackle ship than a seafood shop. Unfortunately none spring to mind, but I'm only a tourist and only know the fish and chip shops, you're a local, you should know where one is.
