So if you've washed the tank, substrate and filter than just add your ornaments or whatever your using for decor. Do all your water treatments like declorinator, buffers and salts if using them. And than start your tank cycle let it go for about a week or two and keep checking on you ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. When you have no ammonia and nitrite your good to go

Try and open the top cover and check that their is no water getting into the motor unit or exposed wires that can trip the safety switch also is it a new or old fuse box as some of the older ones have low rated or outdated fuses u might need to buy a larger rated fuse to cope with the power needs of the canister. This is from personal experience a while ago so if I'm wrong someone please correct me:)

Does anyone know who would be the best person to look why my canister filter is tripping the safety switch is an electrican any help

It might be a earth leakage that is tripping it. Sometimes the cost of an electrician to tell you it is buggered exceeds the cost of a cheap replacement.

I am not an electrician and just based on past experiences.

If I were you I'd see if someone will lend you a working canister filter to plug that in and that will tell you if it's just that power point. Or take your canister filter to a mates place or something and plug that into there power point and see what happens. Your filter might be right you never no could be your power point instead like I said
