benni
mate, a u.v sterilizer kills bacteria, algae spores, viruses, pathogens etc... the only way it clarifies the water is through the prevention of algae growth. if u have fish waste ull need a bigger filter or more frequent water changes.. HereFishieFishie
yeh solution is purigen, less food, more water changes, a look at filtration. Or a mixture of all. Frenchy :sheep:
stevebris
Don't shoot me down people, BUT How about an ozone generator? From what I know they help with suspended particles....... But nothing is going to keep the nitrates down, so frequent water changes are a must! 5 full grown oscars in a 6ft is do-able. What are the dimensions of your tank Rednut? Also do you test your water parameters? ie nitrates You should aim at keeping them below 30....... I used to keep O's and found www.oscarfish.com the best site to learn more about them! Rednut
cheers for the help guys, i do water changes every 3 to 4 days without fail so i dont think it needs to be done any more then that, as far as purigen goes, i went down to the LFS this afternoon and got some. it is really helping. will a UV help at all as far as clarity goes? thanks again Rednut
stevebris
mate the UV is great in any fish tank! It will help with algae and some parasites. You say your water always looks yellow? Have you added any new driftwood lately? Don't mean to offend you, just have to ask. I don't know your experiance in fish keeping.......... Also what are your water parameters? ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph Steve
Rednut
yea, all good. no drift wood and levels are always fine whenever i check. everything seems to be normal except for the colour of the water. o well. it is clearing up a bit. ill leave it overnight and then give an update. also considering getting a second purigen. stevebris
mate I could drop in over the weekend with my master test kit and have a look for you? dont buy more purigen till you figure it out, too expensive! I am free on fri arvo......... Steve
Peter
What food do you give the fish ?- some types will colour the water but Purigen usually clears everything up crystal clear - give it, as you said, till overnight for a 6fter and you should see a big improvement. How many bags / how much Purigen did you use? in HOB Filter or canister or internal? Peter
