New test kit confusion?

Recommended Posts

Got myself some aquasonic testkits as my old brand ran out and felt like a change. Ive tested two tanks for ammonia and all im getting is a zero reading?? Colour is like I did a wee in the tube -_- Deep yellow basically. I know my tanks are not zero as one is getting its filtration fixed (filter broke) and is running on bare min. Ideas?? Im following instructions :/ One level spoon of powder, four drops of liquid per 5ml...:help:

In the tank where u have 0 reading ... how many fish? what filtration? is there a substrate?

See my signature too many fish lol. Both six and five footer were tested. Both have a canister(3300lph) and a internal (800lph).Six footer is sand, five is gravel.

I have tanks with no filtration....no ammonia

No one told the bacteria they have to live in the filter....they don't in nature

All they need is a substrate to grow on, food and oxygen.....and it doesn't have to be on expensve media in a big ar$e filter!!!!

If you have a internal filter....I bet it feels slimy on the outside....that the biofilm you can feel

probably a bigger culture of bacteria of the outside of the filter than inside!!!

Air stone, nope that's why I have a internal for water movement and I can add a air hose if I ever need to up oxygen levels :)

I think im zero guys, just wasn't expecting it. Haven't tested for ages and was getting readings, low but was not zero. All good me thinks :P

Right forgot to update this, I tested ALL my tanks and got the same dark yellow wee colour back in all tanks. Soooooo is it possible all my tanks have nil ammonia?? Just a bit confused as old test kit did show readings....I did test few and far between but.....

I had a old Api test kit. Was out off date. Got a new one and got completely different readings. If you have ammonia your wish would most likely die. A properly cycled or mature tank will show no ammonia

If your tanks are biologically sound your Ammonia readings should be 0. However, your Nitrates should be registering.

What are your other parameter readings?

EDIT: moose you beat me too it :)

Maybe I was getting ammonia readings for a while from the black outs we have had? I only have air pumps as back up and the last one trever4551 had to save the day with a genie (must get one lol) as it went for 12 plus hours. Is there a way I can test for ammonia intentionally, like is our tap water a good source? (I use tank water btw) If not ill go for zero, just don't want to get caught with a false reading kit is all.

OK same readings on both my six and five footer, didn't do my other tanks as I just fiddled with them to get the fry water level back to normal.

Ammonia 0ppm

Nitrate 10-20ppm (not quite 20 but darker then 10, so 15? lol)

Nitrite 0ppm

No gh kh, not quite there yet..

So pretty good right? Weird I got the same results on both tanks or normal? Maybe just maybe this kit is more accurate :P
