yas n will
Hi everyone Just a quick query, I spotted some beautiful Orange Leleupi today at a very reputable store on the North side of Bris, Couldn't resist and bought a whole bunch with the intention of trying to get a few pairs. Once I got home and relocated them into their homes, i couldn't help but notice that the beautiful orange was now yellow. They have been in their tanks now for over 5 hours eating, and appear to be very happy. Have I been had with clever lighting or will they grow into their color? It should be noted that they are all around the 5-6 cm mark, and have been relocated from the LFS water which had a low pH, high ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates...to ph 8, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0 nitrates. Does anyone know whats going on? Cheers Yas and Will

The orange forms become amazing when fed a diet high in tetrabits. The fish you have have good shape around the head and are a great buy. Put up some pics when they settle. lloydashton
Orange Leleupi are more yellow than orange while fry to juvies. You will find that also as they settle in and grow some more they will get that strong orange, if from a good source.

aqc247
It should be noted that they are all around the 5-6 cm mark, and have been relocated from the LFS water which had a low pH, high ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates...to ph 8, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0 nitrates. LFS may like to feed their fish first thing in the morning as well as last thing in the arvo, so can't really afford to fast / purge them 24hrs prior to selling / bagging. Your journey would have been min 30 mins from the shop so enough time for the fish to relieve themselves in the bag after being caught out, so the water parameters go out of whack. Do you run UV? do you add buffer salts? LFS may include these things to stabilize their $$$$stock. They can help bring out the colour since these fish respond to the high pH ie > 8.2+ Read up on some of @Shon's fresh write ups on keeping tangs, you can apply them universally for these fish ie. same lake of origin hth
Wolverine
I have found substrate can make a huge difference on the orange lelupi aswell.
Neolamprologus
Agree with Wolverine I've put bright yellow leleupi on black sand they went dull brownish Moved them onto white sand they are back to bright yellow
trofius
Agree leleupi can be quite variable in colour, my yellows can go from almost white to a sooty grey colour if stressed or playing the subdominant role, rocks will darken them, sand brings out the brighter colour.. Orange leleupi look crazy good on black substrates.
