ado_84
Hey People i have been landscaping the house the last few month and i'm considerin puting in a pond. if i do it though i want to be able to keep african cichlids in it all or most the year round and the dogs need to be able to swim in it if they choose. so, would the dogs getting into it harm the fish apart for the obvious (flea treatment, stepping on, eating)?? and how deep would it need to be (deepest section) for it to maintain a managable temp. for cichlids? i have read the 'frontosa pond' artical on cichlid-forum (US) and a couple others.. what your thoughts? i have no kids and council regs don't bother me at all. shon982
I built an above ground pond that is 10x4x2 so my dogs dont get into it, but they still jump up and drink water out of it and dunk their head under the water to see the fish bigger it is, the easier to keep fish in it I'm trialing some ventralis and ochrogenys in my pond through the winter to see how it goes
smicko
As shon said. Mine is normally around 3ft deep, slighty varies with evaporation and rainfall but I have kept yellows in an ibc outside over winter. Just dont feed as much when its colder as they dont eat as much. smicko
I have 3 marble BN in a 6x2x3 tank, still eating with temp at 9C at night or when raining recently... I just meant that cold rain lowers the temperature of the pond. Its funny you say that about bn, I can see how much they eat by the clean sections on the bottom and they haven't slowed down but the larger americans and africans dont eat as much when its cold. When I throw food in over summer they smash it, over winter they only eat 2-3 pellets each then lose interest. Cheers mick

Hi ado, you see my name so you can see that I am playing with this idea for a while, and still think that only natives, live bearers and goldfish can excel in pond. One more issue will be green water and algae. View angle from above is also not very nice. However, I saw bunnings has the plastic zip white canvas, which can be used to cover the whole pond in winter to make it like a glass house type, the sun will heat the inside and the nylon cover will keep the heat. so the pond will have a carport like roof, and clear nylon zip down cover in winter and removed in summer. Running cost still very high when it rains for several days and heater is required. For now, still think indoor pond may be a cheap running cost option...
