this is a male right ?

Recommended Posts

surely if it was male it would have blue cheeks by now? i've been told around the 10 - 12 cm mark unless they already have a lady in there

there are days where i think i can see blue but i think its just my eyes lol its only about 7-9 cm at the moment

can anyone give me a positive answer ?

Not avoiding giving you an answer.

Its just tricky to tell from the picture, at first glance it looks male to me.

Thing is that until they have their first spawn, the females vent looks similar to the males

You usually want better focus on the rude bits and then enlarge them.

I go another step further and get shots of other ones of same species, so I can compare.

It sounds like you only have one, so thats not a viable option........... which is a shame as it makes it a lot easier.

This is because all species are different, some have large eggs and are easy to spot, others small eggs and dam hard to spot!

(Big eggs = big hole)

Try taking photos of a heap of your fish which you already know the sex of.

Bonus points for ones that have not yet spawned.

Wont be long and you will be the guru.

thanks for all the tips :) and thats why i wasnt 100% sure because i did think that it would be different if they had never spawned before. i look at all the other fish and i can be sure cuz they have spawned and its really easy to tell the difference :) and thanks for the link :) i have seen it before :)
