So... I'm only slightly addicted to watching my two new juvies grow..

I went home for lunch and found the largest had jumped from the holding tank I had it in, into the main part of the tank which houses a single JD about 10cm in length...

I could have cried! The juvie has lost all but about 2mm worth of tail and the flesh at the base of his tail is .... evident.

His eyes are also a little cloudy..

I've placed him back in the holding tank, but I guess he's on borrowed time now?

Any advice you're able to give will help greatly as I am totally shattered.

Thanks in advance.

Salt the tank, ensure you maintain immaculate water conditions and maybe try melafix - heard it works quite well for wounds. Make sure you feed him well if he will eat, and for goodness sake get a cover to stop any re-offending...you'll be surprised how tough some fish can be... I'll cross my fingers and wish you luck...

I use Seachem Stress Guard for shipping but also as a wound healing agent. Although it's not cheap it sure does a marvellous job IME.

This is from the Seachem website...

"StressGuard™ binds to exposed protein in wounds to promote healing of injured fish and to reduce the likelihood of primary and secondary infections."

By the look of it, he will survive, I wont move or touch him for few weeks.

You think?

Will his tail grow back?

I'm going to cry happy tears if he survives!!!

I do have another, but I was really hoping to pair them once they had matured.

I assume that's a bit easier if they grow up together, as opposed to adding them together once they're mature?

I am not experienced with him, but I got one goldfish feeder growing up without tail. Your fish still has a little, let wait a week and see if it stays or not... Or someone more experienced can help you with this.

Clean water, salts and some melafix should get him good but it will take some time. Make sure you keep some air stones in the tank when using melafix.

Will do. Thanks so much :)

Thanks unheatedtank I appreciate your advice!

Does your goldfish swim around ok with no tail?

I actually separated the GT juvies as the bigger one was picking on the little one.. Haha trial and error!!

He's lost his tail completely now..

Doesn't seem to be in pain or getting lazy/slow.

But he isn't eating a great deal.

Still very alert and mobile..

Just leaving him be for now.

Give him time, with fish, best cure would be no care at all, completely leave it alone will help. Or at least what I did with my goldies in the past, if sick or got injured, they went to outdoor pond full of algae and plants... and gone out of sign for a few months, then back to tank healthy and active...

OMG!!! Sharkbait looks amazing!!!!! <3 the lil' guy! I see he is happier in the other tank now.

Dory, Marlin and the other one also look good! xD

Yeah, just gotta get organised and transport Sharkbait and his tank to work... Haha

Marlin is so much bigger and the orange on his tail is thicker and brighter. Almost certain it's male! :)
