HannibalsMum
need a little help with my honeyflame gourami, he isnt looking to good an seems to be lethargic an sluggish when he goes for air. i thought it may of been stress from the other two large gourami's (he is the same size as them) so i have put him in the smaller tank with my smaller gourami's. i found him at feeding time kind of 'sitting' on some weed sucking air, he had been doing it all day an one point he was sitting in a corner of the tank. i have seen the others do this from time to time an the mollies to, but when i touched him he didnt move. i didnt need the net to put him in the other tank (dont like using the net if i can help it) which is next to the main. i have done tests an everything is high however i have just done a corse of protozin to get rid of white spot, an due to strip the tank down a give it a really good clean today (sunday). (it is due for one). ph is 7.2 so i think its ok, an the other gourami's are fine. he has been out of the main tank since 7pm (now 3.30 am, i'm a night shifter) he is still alive but not much change. it almost looks like he is depressed.. what can i do to save him? HannibalsMum
well, he is still alive.. I'm hoping its a stress thing, ATM he is at the top of the tank sucking air and blowing bubbles, but I don't think its a breeding thing cause I have no girls of breeding age. when he isn't at the top, he is almost on his side if he doesn't prop himself between rock or the side of the something. Donny@ageofaquariums
Sounds like he is having trouble getting oxygen. Might be a problem with its gills. How old is it?
HannibalsMum
unfortanly he passed away. i had it for bout 2 or 3 months an it was farly young when i go him. my partner thinks it was genic defect... i dont agree.. what whould i do if this happends again? as i have another 3 honey flame, 2 neons and 3 honey's (2 are a pair hoping to breed when they are older) an dont really want to lose any more. Donny@ageofaquariums
It depends if the fish is 100% healthy when you get it OR if it is already damaged somewhere along the supply chain. Because if its already damaged....... then theres nothing you can do.
HannibalsMum
okies, thanks. as far as i know it was all fine and happy the day before, then it wasnt so good. its a bummer that i didnt see it in time, i was to busy contrating on getting rid of that white spot. (i'm not sure if the girl that had it has scar tissue or it hasn't competly gone)
Donny@ageofaquariums
The other thing to keep in mind is that gourami, like tetra, are often kept in medicated water. This can prevent diseases from exploding but it may not actually 100% cure them. Then when they are placed in non-medicated water, the disease rears its head, symptoms become obvious and sometimes death follows. The worst species for this is the good old neon tetra. With many places along the supply chain throwing meds at them constantly. For me the first priority is to always remove the dead before they can be eaten by any other fish or rot............ as if that happens it gets very difficult to halt the spread. HannibalsMum
i didnt want to go for the neon tetras hence why i have harliqins. so i assume that the best corse of action for me is to keep montering an medicate medicate as needed. i dont really want to keep my tanks medicated all the time.. that is a little bit of a hassle to do that.. an not to metion could get expencive. i always take out the dead fish as soon as i see them ( usally within an hour or less if i knowen something is wrong. the breeders net is great for that) Edited July 8, 2013 by HannibalsMum
Donny@ageofaquariums
Yea not a fan of medicating unless I know theres a specific disease to treat. I would just enjoy the healthy fish sucks to lose one, but its gone now life goes on!
HannibalsMum
ok this time its a neon, now i have him in my rasing tank.. it due to having to many young (2 an half months) mollies in the 25L.. just dont have the space for them anymore. just done tests in the 25L tank an found that most are high except the nitrate, thats at 0ppm. the 25L is the one that is causeing problems due to having almost 30 jr mollies. 5 gourami( one now out), 3 kahuli loaches, and my 2nd largest longfin (bout 10cm with tail), i know it could be to many for that size tank however i cant do much about it.. bout to do a major water change on the tank, i really dont want to lose this little guy as i think the 2 neons could be a pair. I'm almost bout to sell off most of the kiddies... should i do a water change twice a week till i have my 3f tank set up an ready? should i throw some meds in after the water change today? Donny@ageofaquariums
Just keep up the water changes on it. Thats the problem with little tanks hey. toxins build up very rapidly I would top it up using water from another aquarium, as it will help get your ammonia and nitrite under control. rhysl
sad to hear tiny tanks can be a big headache! But it sounds like the tank is cycling, having high ammonia and nitrate, yet no nitrites... Ammonia kills fish have you done a reading lately?
HannibalsMum
yea every thing is fine now, just upping the water changes till 3f tank is a go an some jr mollies sold. the guy with the eye cat, was in the 70L tank. it almost looks like there is a bubble in his eye... :S
HannibalsMum
ok now that my remaing neon is in betterr light i'm not 100% happy bout the way he looks. it could be that i just moved him however i'm not to sure as the others arnt showing the same signs. he is breathing faster than normal, an he has what looks like his gills coming out of the top of his gill plates... i dont know if it was there when i got him or its something that has happened since i've had him. i'm concerned cause i have already lost one neon an i got them fom the same place. ( i sell mollies to them to) i'll tryed to get a decent pic of him, but it was hard to do as he is still a little skittery from the move.
