Advice for setup

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am looking at setting up and breeding setup. I am looking at using 10 2ft tanks on a 2 tier stand. My question is to do with the best filtration setup. 1. Do i drill the tanks and use a sump? If so would a 3ft sump do the trick? 2.Or would not drilling them and use a system i found on this forum ? 3. Or do i use sponge filters and keep the tanks completely separate from each other and heat them individually?

Also Just one other unrelated question Large flat stones for cichlid tank where to get them in brisbane ?

Thanks in advance

Doug

Are all the tanks going to have fish that like the same water conditions in them?

Are they being used for fry growout as well?

I mean sponge filters can work....... but sumps are less work long term.

I would use at least a 4x2x2 for a sump on a system that large........ but then I like large sumps.

They make it all very easy.

Tanks with just air powered sponges tend to work very well for fry, so you may not need to join all tanks to the sump........ although is does make it easy to water change the entire system.

If all fish like the same water conditions I would go a sump. Just make it easy to isolate tanks with taps on the individual inlets to tanks. That way if you need to quarantine new fish for a bit, you can.

Are the tanks already drilled?

or are you drilling them?

have you drilled tanks before?

No the tanks aren't drill yet and no i have never drilled tanks before. I still have to get them so i was going to see if the people i buy them off of can do it. i am looking at new tanks so may have to do some ringing around.

It's your own preference if you buy new tanks, but if you are looking at a breeding setup, I reckon your best bet is to keep an eye out in the classifieds section on this forum for already established setups.

yeah i was looking at the 1st add you put up just trying to work out the holes in the bottom of them as to what they would be used for. Filtration system or just overflow? what would be the best way to clean the what looks like calcium build up of them ?

that is my setup that i have just finished.

the holes in the bottom would be for outflow/overflow. u would have a bit of pipe connected to the hole and then that would be at or around where u want the water line to be.

or if the hole is in the sump it would be made for the pump to connect to via a bit of pipe.

in mine i have polypipe so it is easier to work with then the pvc white pipe which is inflexible at 40mm (sort of flexible at 90mm/stormwater size)

Vinager, hot water and a razor blade.

The tanks had weirs, but I knocked most of them out and was gonna use stand pipes instead.

Sump size will vary on how efficient your media will be.

I was fairly confident with 36x18x18. Because I was going to run a fluidised sand filter off the sump.
