Yoshi
so had my new setup running for a while now. i got a pair of peppermints and 4 juvies in 1 tank 4-6cms about 8 juvies in another tank 4-6cms a trio in the 3rd tank 7-8cms all were doing fine for about 3 weeks, and then i lost the 8 juvies in about 3 days (was away for 2 of the days) and i think the trio may have white spot. it looks like a light dusting of yellow mould looking stuff but it might be their colour but i am not 100% sure. the 8 juvies that died looks like it might be fin rot but not 100% sure. I have also had issues with trying to get some normal bn and some albino bn up to size in my second setup, they get to around 2cms then all die off except for around 5 at the most. this is the same with the longfins but they seem to be all dead all my water is good ammonias etc 0 ph is fine. atm i am just like fkc it, dont care if they all die. i cannot afford to treat with chemicals atm and i cannot afford to get more pairs or trios i am at a stalemate, I love my new setup. but the fish are not playing fair (i know it might be my fault but yeah) I feel like just bailing on the whole fish thing and selling the setup with whatever is left over. but i just feel like i have spent so much time and effort and cash in this (plus the wife would probs be mean and say something like "told u so) i was thinking maybe i can breed something different than bn in the new setup. like guppies or bettas or use them as grow out tanks for some bigger cichlids i can put in the big 4fter or even just hire it out atm for people to grow fry around my area, but that isnt the best idea atm cause i seem to kill things slowly the few peps that i had was suppose to be a starting point where i could use the money that i get from them to get more pairs or trios and build up that setup. but looks like that is not going to happen now Yoshi

Yoshi
oh and i am not out to make hundreds of dollars just enough to cover costs and maybe get a few more pairs if i save.
Donny@ageofaquariums
Yea it never rains........ it only pours man. When it doubt, get in a water change. Thats always been my philosophy anyway, especially when you see finrot symptoms. If you end up with some free tanks, send me a pm. i dont do much breeding at the moment, but sure I can throw you a few fry to grow out.
efc
atm i am just like fkc it, dont care if they all die. i cannot afford to treat with chemicals atm and i cannot afford to get more pairs or trios Pretty good attitude to have aye. Not treating a disease because you can't afford meds?

The gold/yellow moldy looking stuff is the giveaway. on the adults, look closely and it might look like their skin is peeling off if they have it really bad. It ran through my peps and bristlenoses with 100% losses of 100s of juvies before I figured out what it was. The adults survived. I used Aquasonic formalin malachite to kill the bugger and since then its all been sweet. Sterilise your nets ect. as velvet is a sneaky bugger. PETFISH
thinking it sound's like velvet to, use pimafix and take temp. up to 31-32 for 3-4 day's to a week that should bowl it over. don't be to disheartend, we all have prob's with fish keeping but you will get over and on with enjoying the hobby. Donny@ageofaquariums
Velvet is a total jerk to totally take down......... tends to drag out far longer than whitespot. But keep at it, and you shall emerge victorious.
aquaholic99
White spot or velvet or any skin parasite is hard to spot on armoured cats as their skin is covered by plates. You need to get some experience watching fish behaviour to indicate their health/happiness. One thing though, the more fish and tanks you keep, the more fish you will kill. It hurts more when the species are several hundred dollars each.
Yoshi
Yeah I know i dont have a great attitude atm, but after seeing so many die and not knowing what is causing it (i did research but couldn't find anything the gold dusting has only came up in the last couple of days) I will try and try and get some Aquasonic formalin malachite asap, or something similar that will treat it. just ordered some meds from The Tech Den , hope it is here Friday. I will do a 4 day treatment (or 5 day to really kill the fckers) on both 700 litre systems. will also do one on the display tank and sterilise the equipment.... to do this should i soak them in some solution of the meds or boil some water and soak it in that? rhysl
wow, a bit of bad luck I would try not to be dishearted thou... unfortunately, unless you've seen it before its hard to tell what it is... experience is worth so much in this hobby and the only way to get it is with time, money, and a few "oopsies" along the way... Hope some pull thru, and don't overdose! as for the nets, really hot water or condies crystals
fishmosy
Bleach works for nets, buckets, hoses ect. Only need 20ppm to kill everything, equivalent to 2mL in 10L of water. I'm usually a bit more heavy handed. The 'no name' bleach from any of the supermarkets is best, no nasty additives. Give everything a soak for a few hours, rinse well and Bob is your uncle. DFishkeeper
Sorry to hear about your loss mate, I know it is very disheartening, but you will learn from it. I recently lost a whole spawn of Dimi comps through carelessness, and you would think I would know better after 50 years of fishkeeping, but we're all human. I see you are running a couple of systems for your fish. One thing I would counsel is that you don't take your water quality for granted because you are running a system. Just about every system I have ever seen (including mine) is very heavily stocked and requires just as much attention to water quality as a single tank. And make sure you strictly quarantine any new fish before putting them in a tank on your system, I quarantine for 2-3 months before adding new fish to mine. Cheers, Doug
Yoshi
thanks everyone, yeah i getting more encouraged just from the responses in this forum, I will get the meds and will treat, but when u are trying to figure it out and there doesnt look like there is anything wrong with the water or fish and they are just dying it sucks. I thought i knew a bit about this hobby but looks like always it is not what u know it is how much experience u have with things like this. Yoshi
so i got the meds and dosed all the tanks, i have a pep that i think is just barely hanging onto life. when i try to pick it up it swims away but not sure if it will make it. tonight will tell... i did to do the 40ml directly into the most affected tank. although i think tomorrow i will put it in the sump unless u guys say that i am doing the right thing putting it in the tank with the most affected fish. steve6610
we feel your pain Yoshi, jules and i had a chat, and we want to offer you some free bn, when you are on top of this let us know, we have some pep fry you can have, say 4 to 6 depending on what we have when your ready, and if you want we have some other bn here, not sure exactly what, but we should have some sub adult commons in my tanks somewhere, only 2 conditions, 1, you don't give up, ride this out and come back bigger and better, and 2, one day, pay it forward to somebody else in need of a helping hand,
Yoshi
Oh wow thanks Steve and Jules, that would help out a lot. I will wait until i am on top of things and then ill send you a pm, I do/did have a plan for my setup which i think i will still go ahead with now only because of the generous hand people are giving, it is really nice to be able to get some positive feedback and some help. and since i had only 5 2 foots tanks and now i have a total of 15 i should be bigger and better than before. once i am established again i would love to help out others that have had issues with theirs, i do try and help out with free things when i can and things that i dont need or have too many off (like in my display tank i get too many guppies so usually when i see someone wanting live fish i do offer for free although i cannot atm just want to make sure i do not contaminate anyone else with this sh1t)
