HannibalsMum
i had herd that males can kill the girl is both guppies an mollies due to this. its stll very fightful thought. my molly male just keeps at the girls even if they dont want to breed, where my male sword tail has to work, most the time he dont get much in return. an the guppies seem the same, so i can undrstand why they have the "claws"
PeterJ
Both swords and mollies have something similar - they've been observed for a while, I guess this is the first time someone's surgically removed them to look at the effect on breeding success. I've known a few people who've 'trimmed' gonopodia for spreatail platties and lyretail swords when the males become ineffective after the fins get too long. This study suggests they may still have problems anyway.
