What's the deal with proven breeders?

Recommended Posts

I've been wondering what the deal with "proven breeders" is? Why do some charge more for an adult fish that has bred as a posed to one that hasn't?

I've only had in my time one fish that I couldn't get a successful spawn out of, it is a Kamfa male flowerhorn and a percentage of them are just plain infertile.. But all the other fish I tried I had success purely from providing the right conditions and triggers..

I don't breed any fish anymore, just keep them now and let em swim round so I don't really care about buying proven breeders but would like to hear your opinions on the whole deal..

Why do they cost more? Is just a selling point like putting a sexy lady in the add? Personally I'd prefere the pic of the sexy lady in the add :)

Id say its because they breed succesfully. Some fish will eat eggs, kill females during spawning and some are just picky with who they pair up with. I guess it just solves the hassle of going through the above and people are willing to pay to do so :)

L numbers are a prime example of why proven breeders are worth more. You can have young fish that are close to adult size but are still 2 or even 3 years off breeding verses buying proven breeders that have produced fry. Obviously the proven breeders are worth more because whoever buys them wont have to wait for (potentially) three years before they mature.

There is a huge difference especially with tricky to breed species, eg buying proven breeders of Discus or L134's or an unproven pair, the former is worth its weight in gold in general - given that the new owner knows something of the specific requirements of that species. Usually one spawn later, you have paid for the pair with plenty left over. It's good business to buy proven breeders, hands down.

Cheers,

Shaun
