Richard_
Why do you guys have the best fish but the ugliest tanks? Obviously youre not trying for a biotope, but this tank is nothing more than a place for your fish to survive in, ugly to look at, boring for the fish and dirty as well. Bad water, dirty glass, dirty divider, omg have you got any pride? Would you post a picture of your dirty car on a car forum? Of course not! A+ for the fish F for the tank Edited August 19, 2013 by Richard_
Yodapwnsasmurf
Why do you guys have the best fish but the ugliest tanks? Obviously youre not trying for a biotope, but this tank is nothing more than a place for your fish to survive in, ugly to look at, boring for the fish and dirty as well. Bad water, dirty glass, dirty divider, omg have you got any pride?Would you post a picture of your dirty car on a car forum? Of course not! A+ for the fish F for the tank This Fish has gravel which is more than most Flowerhorn. I honestly can't see much wrong with the tank to be honest, if he's being grown up to be a breeders, does it really matter if the water is crystal clear, because the water clarity doesn't always means it's bad. In fact, the Goldfish in my scummy green outdoor pond grow twice as fast as when they are inside in clean water. This Flowerhorn looks pretty damn healthy if you ask me, that kok size would be way down if it was in any way unhappy. For some people, keeping the tank looking spotless is a must, because they have the tank as a display, but a lot of people, and I know this is me, care more about the livestock than the tank. I don't really care if someone has a crystal clear, 12ft aquarium with really expensive ornaments if all they have in it are yoyo loaches. But again, to each their own. I just don't think you should slagg off other people tanks because they aren't the same as the way you keep yours. Hell, mine are all bright yellow from the cichlid mineral and tannin that's in the water, doesn't look the greatest but the fish likes it.
Keith B
Its horses for courses and the many different reasons people get into the hobby, so personal choice informed by experience. My partner and kids have preferences for fancy goldfish, guppies and African cichlids respectively and have sparkling community tanks with nice plants, driftwood and rock piles in the lounge and bedrooms and a fighter or three in the kitchen. But if you are a controlled breeder of fish that are large at maturity like Central and South Americans, and that is your main interest in the hobby then you have the fish probably in an insulated air-conditioned garage in quarters where they can interact safely and water quality in big quantities can be adjusted immediately if need be. Throw a few clean shells and a bit of pottery in as toys though. And water quality doesn't necessarily include turbidity as an indicator - microscopic algae are beneficial, clay particles OK in moderation but suspended dead organic matter and bacterial blooms a no-no. And looking at the fish above I doubt if they are in smelly water.
kasman
Well said Finn and Keith. I think its mostly due to lighting why Lukes tank looks yellow. What a cracking flowerhorn mate! Ur doin a great job with him.
Richard_
Fair comments But if you have such a beautiful fish, why not have him on display in a nice tank, especially if you're showing him off on a forum to us? Clean your glass at least! Great fish and no mistake, just needs clean glass, clean water, a clean divider and a proper light to start showing him off properly Edited August 19, 2013 by Richard_
Richard_
Yoda You said you care about the livestock more than the tank blah blah blah BUT As an aquarist it's your job to care about the tank, the fish look after themselves dude!
Donny@ageofaquariums
Its one of those showing off the fish rather than the tank situations. I am moving away from the industrial breeder look towards the hobbyist display tank look. Its quite a drastic change really. But a very different way to enjoy the hobby. I guess the point where the 2 hobbys colide is when you buy a fish from a breeder...... and as you goto add it to your tank you think to yourself My god that waters yellow, theres no way I am adding THAT to my aquarium! Which is good, I never add other people water. buuuuuuuuuut without the breeder, theres nothing to put in displays and without the display guys theres no reason to breed. You supposed to be my kin Mexican or Asian, European or Korean or JamaicanMakes no difference Our existence is still shared between us in essence

I know I enjoy my fish most if the tank is looking its best. But different people have different priorities. As donny said he makes a good point, there is a time when breeder meets display. Having a display breeder is quite a challenge, but its acheivable!
Keith B
mmmmmm I have something like a display breeder for a pair of KKPs who are both entertaining during bumping encounters and like to keep their fry, but I won't be breeding FHs or red texas in them. I would love to be able to but cant find muzzles that fit. On another note hybrids in mixed tanks pick the most unlikely mates.

Yodapwnsasmurf
YodaYou said you care about the livestock more than the tank blah blah blah BUT As an aquarist it's your job to care about the tank, the fish look after themselves dude! Yellow water and algae ridden glass isn't going to negatively affect the health of your fish. There are heaps of factors anyway, it can't just be "Make your fish tank look nice or don't post it." I'm about to hand in 2 major works next week for my HSC, this whole year I haven't had much time to maintain the aesthetic appeal of my tanks, but in all honesty I can tell you my fish are healthier than ever. And when I show pics of my fish, I don't expect people to be judging the look of my tank, I want them to admire my fish and see what I'm seeing. When was the last time you saw an American cichlid swimming around in a completely sterile environment, even on TV?
Donny@ageofaquariums
There are no pictures online of my old betta drip racks of cups, dripping into cups...... because they grew algae on them and it was such a mission to clean them....... I should of just taken pictures, as it was really easy to do. Anyone posting pictures up is win for us all. You can learn a lot from a picture of what another fish keeper has done. That said if the fish is for sale, you should clean the glass. Scrubbing away algae and removing dead fish from tanks......... is at least 50% of whats required to sell fish well. Ventus what sort of display do you think a rainbow cherry king would look best in? A man made hybrid is free of any biotype restrictions. I'm thinking red gravel and large silk palm trees. A bubbling LED red volcano. And a remote control submarine chew toy.

Donny@ageofaquariums
In all honesty I guess I should answer the call and say "I'm a lazy one.. I guess." Even though the quote specifically points to one who "defends" a messy tank. I don't necessarily defend mine. I think the problem is that I haven't had a "real" new tank for a while(maybe a decade) so.. in my case the messy tank is probably due to lack of interest. Guess I'll just have to convince the wife that, IF she wants the tank to look it's best, we need another one 3 times larger to re-captivate my interest in the hobby!! Do it man. I did and I have not looked back. Something about having something new that rekindles it all.
cichlidbro
I've got this huge change jar that's loaded. A few more months of change and she's ready for crackin'! I've been jugglin' between a 90, 120 and 220. 90 is easily do-able even if it's double what I already have but I might suffer f/ho-hum syndrome in a coupl'a years. My buddy's got a 120 gallon and visually it's quite a jump from the 90 but looks way bigger and has that AW factor for me not to mention any guests! I were to go full tilt and get the 220 then I'd only do that with a sump system, which I've never done and am reluctant for a few reasons.(i.e. noise level, humidity, cleaning the sump tank) I'm considering it b/c I heard the extra water really helps keep the water clean and the parameters in check. Maybe you all can chime in with your experiences w/sumps? (Guess this is what you call "bumping" a post.. sorry it's my first bump.. now I feel kind'a ****ty)
gingerbeer
I have cleaned this thread. I don't mind discussion but looks to me like some trolling is going on...... I am all for keeping water to make fish happy, but do not believe that water has to be clear. The fish is clearly happy and not suffering issues. This thread is about the fish, not the tank. Time to move on. Good looking fish Lucas.....
