Donny@ageofaquariums
Is it just me, or are tanks evaporating especially fast lately?
rainbowrunner
whenever we get dry westerlies I can lose an inch per day in the ponds and sump, even more than on a hot summers day
Donny@ageofaquariums
I actually thought I had a leak in one tank...... just because of the speed of drop.

floppingflamingos
Our sump always evaporates at a stupid rate. I only know its time for a water change when the sump pump starts to run dry.
flatfish
Tried using corflute as a lid on the sump?
Yodapwnsasmurf
Tried using corflute as a lid on the sump? I just discovered corflute as a lid the other day when I was using it to cover a 2fter that evaporated half it's water every week.
Lasher
All my tanks all have lids but one - my largest. And in the past 4 days I've lost about the equivalent of a water change due to evaporation. I had to remove 20% today and replace it with 40%! On a semi related note, I normally put in about a tablespoon of salt in each 40L change. With the amount I'm losing due to evaporation, I did not add any salt today, on the premise that when the water evaporates, the salt remains. If I continued adding salt each top up, it would result ultimately in a saltwater tank: fresh water only evaporates, the salt does not. Thoughts...? grubby
Now that you mention it yeah, not so much on the tanks as they are all well lidded but the ponds are shocking.
shon982
All my tanks have lids and the sumps are covered with stryo (as lids) but my marine tank goes through 20L of water every few days because it has no lids
Ninja_In_Galoshes
Come to think about it yeah I have to. More so the tanks inside than the ones in the garage.
JayPee
I did read that you lose more water to evaporation in winter than you do in summer. I have lids on one setup not so bad. The other system has lids on tanks but not on a 4 ft sump and holy the water goes out of it.
