Vasalissa
Hey guys, Decided on getting a few YoYo loaches. Aiming for about 3 in total. Went to the local yesterday and grabbed 2 who seemed healthy. Acclimated them put them in the tank and one died.. So went back to the fish shop who happily replaced them and another one is dying again today. Water Is perfect: Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 5 PH: 7.2 Temp: 25-26 Running for about a year and a bit now. Air stone. They are in a 10 G for the time being in about a week they will be moved to the 80G. They are only babies about 1" long so they aren't cramped for space. Very confused :S
Vasalissa
There is no salt added to that tank, there is Indian Almond leaf. I have put a fresh root tab in there?
PETFISH
how did you acclimatize them?

Vasalissa
how did you acclimatize them? I floated the bag in the tank for 20 minutes added a bit of water they sat there for a while longer (got distracted reading on the forum) and added more water waited about 10-15 minutes then netted them out... Used any medication? No medication I dont like to add meds to the tanks that aren't hospital tank in case it buggers the filter.
goneself
Hm. I only ask as the loaches are sensitive to meds, and its the first thing I think of. What else is in the tank?
PETFISH
could be shock, i put fish in bucket and add air stone ,then drip feed from tank for about 1 hour then net out, also as i do this i will remove some water from bucket.
Vasalissa
Hmmm... Maybe it is shock :S This is so frustrating. Theres plants in the tank two ornaments. New root tablets for the plant. Could that be burning them.
PETFISH
that i could not tell you, i have some big clown loaches but there is no plants in that tank because there are tinfiol's and silver dollars in there to.
Vasalissa
hmmm :S I have a baby bottom feeder in there who is perfectly fine, he isn't dying or breathing heavily or rolling on his side just the loaches *sigh*
Yodapwnsasmurf
I can't imagine it's the acclimation, last fish I lost to poor acclimation was a tiny Peacock Bass who I actually didn't acclimate (Bag of water was like sludge). Yoyo Loaches are hardy as! All I can think of is aggression from a tank mate?
PETFISH
loaches do roll on thier side all the time when resting, ive had mine for 12 year's and still think they are dead until i get closer and they jump up and swim of.

All I can think of is aggression from a tank mate? We are keeping them in that tank until the 10G is ready only tank mate in there is the BN pleco and he barely comes out from hiding so I don't THINK its aggression could be wrong... Thing is they are only in there for, half a day before their breath gets quick and they start lying on their sides. admittedly they do jump up and swim off occassionally but then back to it. I have tried to get them to eat also. Haven't gone near the algae wafers that I have seen... :S
PETFISH
i dont know if they eat a/wafer's, i feed mine on koi pellets, cichlid pellets, vipan flake, corn/peas mashed and catfish pellets.
Yodapwnsasmurf
Maybe they are just faking it? BN can kill if they want to, had a big female kill a male when the tank was too small.
Vasalissa
I'm starting to think they were playing dead just to screw with me :S Today they seem fine, swimming around colours dark screwing about a little bit. VERY CONFUSING! definately a possibility ,what else is in the tank? also the ph and nitrate are a tad on the high side for loaches. We have tried lots to lower PH but the tap water buffers are pretty strong and we can only get it lowered for a day before it goes back to 7.2 ish I changed about 50% of the water last night which would have lowered the nitrates which could be the cause for their sudden perkiness. Vasalissa
BN is only an inch long he is a baby I don't know if he would be capable of killing...
th3f0rg0t3n
paki loaches will do just fine in 7.2 ph, nitrate also shouldn't be an issue generally a pretty tough fish in general, have got a breeding pair of them that i mainly feed bloodworm/ sera vipan / vipagran flake&granules perfectly normal behaviour for them to lose colour off and on and lay down on they're side while they sleep or rest
Vasalissa
What about laboured breathing and and not just lying on his side but occasionally on his back also?
goneself
Doesnt sound right to me. I'm guessing if the tank only had one bn in it before the loaches arrived, the bio filter isnt working properly.
Vasalissa
Nah, The bio filter is fine it was the loaches, after the two died the fish shop replaced them and since the 3 loaches have been fine, the new ones are active swim around the tank together eat, are playful and absolute joy to have in the tank!!! Love them.
