garden variety plants in aquariums

Recommended Posts

i dropped into an aquarium store in brisbane today and while having a good selection of fish and equipment to keep my interest, i was confused when i seen mondo grass in the aquarium plants section for sale. i have a frontosa tank and bare bottom breeding racks both of which have no plants at all, so my knowledge on the subject is limited. I thought there would be a difference between underwater plants and garden plants. can anyone shed some light on this for me please

cheers

Many aquarium plants can grow emerse (out of the water) however, there are quite a few plants you'll see in pet shops that will last a while submerged but are unlikely to survive most aquaria in the long run. Mondo grass, aluminium plant, spathiphyllum, and parlor palm are amongst those that show up fairly regularly.

People want what people want. As long as the shop makes it clear that they aren't true aquarium plants and will die off and go to mush sooner or later, there really shouldn't be a problem. If the person buying the plants( and whatever else) is to ... Lazy to do a quick search on the net b4 buying then stiff bickies,2- if asked outright if true aquarium plant and told yes, that's a different story.

Personally I hate those plants esp when you can go to bunnings and get them a lot cheaper. Or take cuttings off numerous bushes along pathways ect. Those stupid Xmas plant things are numerous in the queen street mall. Elephant ears behind greenslopes hospital by the thousand and so on
