Michael. thomas
just purchased a 3 and 5 footer with canister filters. Should I use the old filter media- matting, bio balls and ceramic noodles? If so, should I treat it some how to get rid of any nasties??? Any ideas how to clean the built up s#*t on the glass and in the tubing- it all looks really good- just filthy

th3f0rg0t3n
throw away the old media's, and replace with new stuff. it's cheap to buy and just not worth the risk. most media also has a life expectancy, and as such is advised to replace in say 6 or 12months maybe a few rags and some elbow grease should get that glass shining once more
Michael. thomas
thanks. I think the crap on the glass shouldn't be to bad to get off, it's the build up in the tubing that will be a bit more challenging- I guess tubing doesn't coast that much either. I had heard that media has a life expectancy but just didn't understand why
rhysl
boiling it will kill most nasties, and stink out the place if you want to save some cash. but media is cheap and bio balls are close to useless in a canister. as for the glass, for the really bad calcium build up grab some $2 razors from Bunning's, some acetone and a microfiber cloth, works wonders. or just spit and a rag - what ever is easiest

Richard_
Tropical Fish Centre - Fishkeeping Myths Good advice Biff old media and start fresh with no bioballs Use only ceramic noodles or something similar for good bacteria. Bioballs only for sumps Glass cleaner - avoid any chemicals unless you can 100% know they are rinsed out. Elbow grease
