RJHELL
Most rocks are fine. For prep i always give it a good hose and scrup and pour boiling water to kill any nastys that maybe hideing. Post a photo as well on here and one of us should be able to tell you. Donny@ageofaquariums
I'd beware of suspicious rocks, such as those still slightly glowing due to a hidden molten magma core. These can spike the aquarium temperature and shock fish. The other common danger when collecting rocks is the fact they might have been sprayed for fire ants. th3f0rg0t3n
not to mention some species of snails eggs/larvae aren't killed with boiling water, would take some serious chemicals or detailed scrubbing to remove them parasites@! cichlidbro
I've always been wary of using rocks I've collected. However, the ones I did use I did as all the above said. scrub, boil, power wash & they were good to go. No fish loss neither. Now when I finally get going on a "bigger project" I can use the $$ I saved on fish and... either a wavemaker or some serious LED lighting. I guess the lighting would be first choice but wavemakers seem to make sense but I don't see a lot of people using them for non-reef set-ups. smellycheese
Yeah I'm also thinking of adding a wave maker into my system so the fish have something to swim against
