litigator666
My auto feeders took care of my fish for two weeks. If you can get a family or neighbour to fill it up after two weeks youll be able to save money. Likely itll depend on how you set it and volume of food. I have a few feeders that i can loan you if that helps.
ozmo
Friends of mine are thinking about including fish sitting/feeding/tank maintenance to their existing pet care business. They asked me if there would be much call for it. I said I'd ask. So, I apologise for high jacking this thread, but I guess now is as good time as any... Here's a couple of Qs: How many people would realistically use this service? What level of service would most people require? (I.e. feeding only or maintenance also) How much would you expect to pay for such services? Cheers, Rob
Thomo29
i used to do a tank maintenance service in uk , but mostly doctors, dentist, lawyers ect, good money, meet good ppl and share knowledge to beginners... before i would let someone feed and change my tanks , u would need to know a bit about them , how much they know, do they keep fish, do they understand water conditions ect just my thoughts... at least with friends u can give clear instructions ..lol Thomo
Shanoz
I will be looking into using Edd from Edd's Home Fish Care, he has just recently joined here. His prices seem reasonable and he is not to far from home. The Missus and I are heading back to St Catherine's (Main town beside Niagara Falls), Toronto, Canada for 4 weeks over xmas, so instead of trying to teach my mates on how to look after fish I was looking at using Edd for a couple of days a week as my fish seem to do ok with a day or two of not feeding, keeps my tanks clean as the can eat any scraps around and also keeps them nice and healthy from not being over fed. So yeah, Edd seems like the go if not maybe someone on here would like to do it for me................ wink wink nudge nudge! sej66
Good thread. I to have the same dilemma!!!! Earlier on this year (March / April) I decided to visit my dad and relo's in Vic for 2 weeks only. I had made sure, I had cleaned all my tanks before I left, which only took one week. lol Being a single mum of 4 kids, I flew down with my 11yr old and 14yr old. My 18yr old and 16yr old boys stayed at home as they had Uni and Soccer commitments. My 16yr old has always supported me with my fish addiction and I'm teaching him (more like bribing him) to have an interest in fish keeping, which seems to be working as he loves fishing and fish. Anyway, to cut a long story short.... I bought a car in Vic to get around in and flew my kids back home as i wanted to drive back by myself. (Do you blame me) lol However, I BLEW THE DAMM THING UP. I was stuck in the middle of nowhere (Wally's World - West Wyalong) for another week but had a ball at the local pub whilst trying to get my car back to Frankston. My 16yr old rings me and says, "Mum, your beloved red male Flowerhorn LOOKS SICK!!!!" I thought Holy Crap and couldn't get home fast enough. So I got my car back to Dad's asap with his help, then booked a flight and flew back in a matter of 2 days. Turns out my Flowerhorn was FINE > My 16yr old thought he would "trick me" as he knows how much i love my fish. He had done a water change on all the tanks only ONCE each and decided he had "had enough". He told me, "If you ever go away again, I am NOT cleaning your tanks ever again. Either have them all sumped or external canisters on ALL of them." SO ED LOOKS LIKE HE IS GOING TO BE MY SAVIOUR. Thanks Shanoz as I need to escape from my teenagers from time to time. We can always offer a drop in service to check chiller is running correctly while you're away during hot season. We could also arrange to forward photos of tank and chiller temp during drop in and send to your phone or email so you get an update while away. thatsright99
You can feed them every 2-3 days, that'll be fine. If there's someone at home still you can bag up the food to be fed every 2-3 days. If they have been feed correctly they won't need to be fed for the first week, xcept babies and terra size fish. Auto feeders are limited again depending on numbers and size of fish. If you are going to use them, get them and experiment on amount of food put out. Most important is not to overfeed. Moveing fish would be stressful, if you could have the person come to yours, it would be less stressful for the fish. Maybe a neighbor could help out, like they would a few years ago in a time gone by- depending if they are decent people or not.
frankthedolphintrainer
Wow some great replies, it seems to be a common problem. I cant use auto feeders on the discus tank because they wont eat pellets (only freeze dried worms and beef heart). As for feeding them every 2-3 days I would be worried that the discus would loose their shape and size after a month of not eating properly (they get fed 3 small meals a day currently). I have one advantage with the tank that it doesnt require water changes because I build a auto water changer on it. Friends arnt the best as most of them have no idea with fish. Keep the ides coming
