Flanagan001
HELP - My GT's have just had their 2nd batch of fry. Today is their 2nd day swimming. A bigger fish in the tank swam through the middle of the batch(eating a few on the way) and they scattered. Mum and dad going crazy trying to gather them back together and beating the other fish, so I removed the dollar and 2 Bristlenose. All that's left in the tank now is the mum & dad and their fry but, the parents are stil acting erratic and biting each other.
Mitch86
I'd suck them out with a hose into a little grow out tank
Flanagan001
Not a bad idea, thanks
aquaholic99
If you wait till the lights re out, the parents will have collected and hidden them in a dug out depression in the gravel. Easy to siphon when they are all in a pile. Make sure you leave a couple behind or the parents will blame each other. Fish can't count so you can safely take 98% of them. Donny@ageofaquariums
this is very true. nothing causes more domestics among pair substrate spawning cichlids..... than a suspicion their mates eaten all the kids. I usually only take half the wrigglers as thats a lot anyway and besides the parents might do a good job unless they all get sucked into filter intakes. Flanagan001
The parents are doing a great job now and the babies are growing nicely. How often should I do a water change and how much, 10%, 25%, 30%? Should I do a gravel clean too as there is a lot of uneaten food, or will this be to much for parents and babies? Tejay
I am new to this but; - I breed my green terrors without gravel etc (to make it easier for cleaning) - Syphon the bottom of the tank every day using air hose tubing I also wrap Aluminium foil around the air hosing to scare the fry away as they seem to die of shock if they are sucked up. zorbadundee
I woldnt recommend taking out the substrate its a lot better than bare bottom for several reasons, I woiuld just leave fry eith parents, inless you have sale commitments. Tejay
Out of interest zorbadundee, what are the reasons for leaving the substrate in place? For me, I can't leave them in the tank as I want to sell them and it is a community tank and it causes to many dramas. I found I killed a lot when having substrate in there and struggling to clean the rubbish from the substrate.
