SaltyTank88
Hello, Bought about 60kg of Coral Base Rock that was used in a system quite some time ago. Has been sitting in a shed. Just wondering what the best way of making that rock safe to put in a new reef tank im building. Is just a good wash and dry in order or is there more i should do? Any help would be muchly appreciated. Thanks
Eh man
Depends on how much effort you want to put,u could just throw it in but i would give it a really good wash if its been sitting around for a while.maybe even a bleach bath to get it nice and white but that's a lot of muckin round before its safe to go back in. SaltyTank88
Cheers for that. I'm still in the middle of the build and have been patient and tried to do everything right so far. I don't want a bit of old rock to be my demise lol. I might give it a really good wash and just have it ready. If i can find some base rock in a running system buy that and sell this off really cheap if i cant ill use it and see how i go. DanesFish
If you want to bring your Calcium based rocks upto scratch I would personally dip each rock in a diluted bath of hydrochloric acid. That wil strip and dissolve your rocks into nothing if you were to leave them in their for a few weeks, the bubbles released are carbon dioxide but do not do this in a confined space as acid is extremely dangerous in confined space. Obviously don't get it in your eyes or mouth and do it outside. Your rocks will be as good as new!!! (After a few minutes)
Donny@ageofaquariums
If the rocks look good, I would soak in some water for 5 days, and then test water for ammonia. If theres none. They are likely safe. Placing them in the sun with bring them back to nice and white.
