thaiga
Hi, I average 250 a quarter as I'm rarely home. Well only home to sleep... But this quarter was 570.... The only thing diff is I now use a 300w heater in my tank... But I can't believe a heater can do this much damage? It's set to 26 deg in a 4 ft tank... grubby
My bill went up into the $500 too. The freeze that the LNP put on power was lifted on July 1 and the power companies are getting one last gouge in before they repeal the CO2 Tax. ozmo
Yeah they are screw'n us. My last bill was $1200 ish and that's with a 5kw solar system. So my actual bill was over 2k. Flipp'n criminals!!!
green_muffin
My electricity billb is not too bad. We have 2 people living in the house and a 1.5kw solar system and we get credit...although they recently jacked up the price for gas...
zorbadundee
That's a lot for one heater even at $0.25 a KW (thats expensive rate), considering the heater isnt on 24/7 (havent even need mine since mid september around 27% water temp) 1000/300 so heater is around 25cents every 3.33ish hours. So around every 13.32 hrs is a dollar at that rate. Winter can be expensive but during the warmer months id just unplug the heater and check temps if the temp is ok in the early moring it will be fine the rest of the day. Im dreading winter in the new tank I setup with my 300w heater but the larger the tank th emore stable the temp stays. Or just move past Rocky and not need a heater
zorbadundee
Also you lights will help heat the tank sum what as well if there fairly close to the surface it does help since they will be on anyway why not get them to help heat and use less heater. green_muffin
also another thing to check is that it wasnt an "estimated" read...get your bill and check the meter and see for yourself to make sure they havent made a mistake
Cudders
My bill (per quarter) went from $300 living by myself, to $350-400 with the aircon/aircon heater on for a couple of hours everyday, to around $500 for my last 2 bills. 60% increase over the span of a year and I haven't really made any drastic changes to power consumption

grubby
Yeah mine went up and during the winter I installed LED lights in 95 % of the house. The only place we still have non leds are the two outside patio flouros, the garage flouro, 1 oyster light and 1 security light, all other security lights have been converted to LED. We hardly use the heaters as we are well insulated. 1 tank uses LED, 2 tanks use T5's and only one uses a small T8 light. Three tanks run off 1 air pump of which two were not heated through winter as they ran cold water fish. Two tanks are in a well insulated room with lids so the heaters probably didn't draw much. Both these tanks run 2213's and I did have air pumps running on them this quarter which I have now switched off. There is no way I am using more power this quarter. I feel like sending my Power bill to Peter Beattie and saying pay this Douche bag, you said that power bill would get cheaper under deregulation. cram
A 300W heater on for 8 hrs/day will cost you $54 for 90 days (at 25c/kwh). A single 4 ft T8 flouro on for 10 hrs/day will cost you $10.80 for 90 days. A 100W pump on 24hr/day will cost $54 for 90 days. So has your actual kwh use increased or just the cost? Would be good if both values were posted. In any case, wecome to a capitalist society.
cram
There is no way I am using more power this quarter. . Your bill tells you how much power you actually used and the per kwh cost.

grubby
Your bill tells you how much power you actually used and the per kwh cost. Well according to the bill we have, but surely all the leds should make a difference. Next thing we do is gas boosted solar hot water or a heat pump hot water. If that doesn't bring it down,Im ringing the ombudsman, we now pay more for power than we did before we switched' the cooker over to gas. Nuts. We also use standby savers on all the AV equipment, don't run lights when we don't need em. The pool is on off peak power and we make sure we run the washing machine, dishwasher and dryer after 8 O'clock. The 2nd fridge is very efficent and is in a well insulated garage that sits at 24 degrees most of the time, the dishwasher is the top of the line German made bosch and the most energy efficent you can get as is the washer and dryer. Its not that we cannot afford our power bills, we are just trying to watch our carbon footprint and do the best we can by planet earth. Oh well next step solar HW, don't want to invest in a solar power system as we plan on making the house we are in an investment property and move on to acreage and don't see the point. sej66
As you are all aware... electricity rates increased from the 1st July this year (2013). Tariff 11 c/kWh was 26.092 NOW it is 30.228 !!!! Supply charge c/day was 29.612 NOW it is 56.826 !!!! This is just an example with AGL. IT IS A JOKE. !!!! I have two meters at my place ... one is for Peak consumption and the other is for Off peak consumption. The Off peak consumption one kicks in at 6pm - 6am. Since the price hike I NEVER use my Clothes Dryer (1860W) unless it is an "absolute emergency" for School Uniforms. My Vacuum Cleaner is another big user of Electricity at (1800W) so I hardly use that at all anymore as we are on concrete floors which I have painted. The old brush and pan does it all now and I have given away all my floor rugs as a result. The Dishwasher and washing machine only get turned on after 6pm. I unplug all leads I don't use during the day as much as I can as well. In future: I am going to buy a portable gas cooker from BCF to do all my cooking and I am going to put Styrofoam on all the back and sides on all my tanks. It is RIDICULOUS that we have to go this extent now across the board but what else are we suppose to do. ???? It amazes me how modern technology is an everyday commodity now, YET we are slowly but surely converting back to the 17th Century way of doing things. Think about it for a moment. Perhaps we all should go with Plywood tanks like they are doing in Europe.
DeagonTheo
People look for ways to cut down on electricity, it doesn't work. When people cut down on electricity they just Jack up the price, it's not as if we can go online and get our electricity from China, like you can physical goods. They have us over a barrel, if we all cut our electricity by half, they would just double the price.
DFishkeeper
The most ridiculous thing I have ever read was a story in the paper earlier this year about how one of the major electricity retailers was saying that one reason they had to put the cost of electricity up by 22% was their admin costs were constantly increasing due to the increasing numbers of people unable to pay their power bills. That sounds like the sort of thing you would expect to read in an Irish newspaper. Talk about a self-perpetuating prophecy.
