Rastinger62
hahaha. Good one Brent. yeah there is 4 males and 3 females so not ideal and thought about selling an excess male due to a little aggression already but I think they have learnt there pecking order already fingers crossed. They are in a 4ft temp tank until this 8x2x2 can be tested in a week so they will have enough room. They will go in with large WC Mpimbwe frontosa so a few more girls wouldn't go a stray. If aggression picks up again I might have to look at selling an excess male.
Rastinger62
about 25cm Lachie is about the max on the sizing. They love live food and got themselves a treat of about 30 crimson tide tonight. It's like watching Pbass smashing fry but just not as quick lol
DFishkeeper
I've regularly grown males to around 30cm. How big are they James, I'm surprised you can keep more than one male in a tank if they are 22cm or bigger. Cheers, Doug
Rastinger62
wow Doug. I thought 25cm was about the max I've seen and owned. There only 15 - 18cm ish and aggression isn't too bad.
DFishkeeper
Hi James, At 15-18cm they're still very young fish, so I'm not surprised you're not having aggression issues YET Trust me, as they grow, aggression will increase exponentially as each male wants a bigger and bigger territory. And the bigger they get, the more damage they do when they belt each other, so you usually lose the loser, male or female. From about 22cm on, I will be very surprised if you can keep more than one male in the same tank. As far as protecting females from aggressive males, make sure you give them plenty of large enough hidey holes, floating ones are good. I use cut up 50mm agg pipe as it floats and the females will go and sit in it where the male can't see them. Cheers, Doug
Rastinger62
thanks for the info Doug and I always wondered how you have told me a long time ago about giving structure at the top of the tank so I will do that. I should of scooped up on your colony a few months back so now the hunt is on for a few more girls. I plan to house in with the WC Mpimbwe frontosa as they were originally housed in the same tank together with no issue. There all going into a 8x2x2ft so hopefully long term I can get away with at least 2 males in there but what you said makes plenty of sense. My old colony of eye biters were 1m 3f about the 20 - 25cm ish mark and aggression wasn't too bad in general but if there was another male in there that could of been a different story. They were in a 6x2x2 back then and the girls used to tap him up if anything lol
