Plastic tub trickle filter

Recommended Posts

I need to filter an 8x2x2.5. I have a spare 6x18 I was going to use as a sump. But thinking of going alot simpler and just sitting one of these plastic tub racks in it as a trickle filter.

Picture is of an example off the net ( I have one of these plastic racks in my garage doing nothing) - just fill the draws with media would hold quite a good volume close to 80L I would think. run the water through the top down the bottom then pumped back out. Seems very simple as opposed to converting my old tank into a sump with baffles etc.

Just after peoples thoughts.. good / bad idea?? anyone using a similar setup?

Can only try it and adjust it as you go  but you can make a filter out of so many things...especially these trickle style ones...its all in the media I reckon(and the pump)...no doubt you pay moola for the sexy casing on filters :eyebrows:..go for it mate...I used buckets as trickle filters for ponds outdoors...savin moola

Would you hold the draws in place with something?? some ties in holes?.id worry about water movement popping a draw out if has any serious flow going through it...!?!

yeh I dont think thatd be an issue hey, have you ever used one of these things??? haha you can never get the damn draws out except at a million miles an hour with 1000000kN of force lol.

Pump I will be using one of these little beasts Aqua Nova 10,000 LPH Pump, 85 Watt, 5m Head Height 10,000LPH should do the trick. Will prolly have at least 4 x 25mm bulkheads in the tank I think it get max flow but havnt done the calcs yet. And I spose Id have to take into consideration the time it takes for water to trickle through the media. That might restrict me quite a bit???

I used one of these for a while, takes abit of trial and error to get right but so easy to maintain/customise once you are set up. Make sure you consider the flow rate through the bottom of the trays when the media clogs up and you should have no worries

haha yeh he does go on a bit. but he pretty much explained what I had thought in my head so it was good to hear.

Well its not going to cost me a cent to give this a crack so I may aswell.

I'll be wanting to shift as much water through it as I can so that will be the thing to balance out getting the flow right, but you got that with sumps aswell.

While Im hear, any tips for drilling glass? Iv heard using a ply template is a good way to go.
