Young male bettas are separated from a spawn and placed in grow out containers when they start fighting at a young age. Usually a jar or small tank in a barracks system. The males are carded, a card is placed between the tanks/jars so they can not see each other. Every day, they are uncarded for 10 minutes or so to flare at the male next to them. If they are left uncarded, they quickly stop flaring because they are used to seeing other males and know their threat display won't scare the other male away.
