Dose tannin affect your tank?

Recommended Posts

In short it is the colour that leaches from the wood. Makes your tank look a little bit like a cup of tea. Can give it a nice natural look but if you do not like the tea look there is a number of products out there that will remove tannins so you can have a nice piece wood with out the tea look. We do Macropore which is a water polisher and will remove the tannin stain look and polish the water to give your tank a crystal clear look.

uhhh it actually softens your water and lowers your PH levels so depending on the fish you keep it "technically" could be a danger to your fish. Like for African Lake cichlids, most need high PH and hard water (its better for them). It is great for Aussie native fish and most Americans.

Some other positives of tannins ...

* Viruses and bacterial pathogens do not do so well in water with a lot of tannins.

* Tannins help with maintain the slime-coat in soft water species.

* Aids in reducing fungal growth on eggs.

* Soften snail shells.

If you are keen on enhancing or adding tannins to an aquarium I highly recommend also using IAL. They not only release tannins but also so many other goodies which create a natural, healthy environment.
