MichaelPark
Was at my LFS today and was looking at the many types of clownfish they had. The first question I asked them was why 2 of them were so much more colourful/brighter in colour. He told me they were wild caught clownfish. He continued to tell me they were nearly 3 times the price of tank raised ones. Just wondering if tank raised ones will colour as well as wild caught ones? The ones I saw were amazing and even though the price, I would have chosen them.. Does this also go for other species of fish that can breed in captivity? Thanks. liquidg
Tank bred on average are tougher relating to impurities and if you change their diet, any and all, they colour up nicely. One issue with tank bred amphiprions is they don’t always do well with anemones.
thatsright99
Where was this shop? Wild caught should be cheaper so that's a load of rubbish.. what was the prices difference?
MichaelPark
Where was this shop? Wild caught should be cheaper so that's a load of rubbish.. what was the prices difference? Was like $250 for a breeding pair where as it was like $120 (can't remember this one correctly) for a tank bred breeding pair.
thatsright99
Where are you you? ... where's the shop ? Did you see proof of the breeding pair is in with the babies or at least eggs ??
Donny@ageofaquariums
Tank raised clowns are cheaper these days because of the efforts of awesome breeders like sir radioman and others. It was not always that way. They colour up fine on a good diet.

Donny@ageofaquariums
Down to $5 from breeders. Wholesale on wildcaught clowns is usually $15 + If you see them lower than $20 each, thats a bargain. liquidg
Interesting pricing guys, I am a bit confused as well michaelpark! Though imported wild caught are quite cheap!
Donny@ageofaquariums
Just depends on how fussy you are really. Clowns take up space, so you just have to be in the right place at the right time to catch a breeder clearing stock.
matt_a
Last time I saw tank bred clowns for sale they were asking $10 each or 20 for $100, and they had literally hundreds of the damn things.
Donny@ageofaquariums
You only call them dam things because they need slightly more minerals in their water than tangys do lol but yea when you need to clear clowns, you need to clear them as fun as it is to horde them of course! th3f0rg0t3n
Maybe better where possible to support tank bred types of marines, help you sleep easier at night even if there is a little less colour ! Haven't you seen finding nemo
MichaelPark
Just an update that the cheapest I've now found, for clownfish, is 100% Reef Safe. $55 for a pair of Amphiprion ocellaris. Are these the 'mainstream' clownfish Shop
BRISSY
Breeders will be much cheaper than that, $15-20/pr.
thatsright99
Don, if u want to give me $15/clown + costs to get them, I will get you as many as you want mate. When you say pairs.. is that bred PRS or just 2 fish? Its not that hard to get a bigger one and a smaller one and say they're a pair. And Michael park you still haven't answered the questions I asked....
thatsright99
Those fish could be anything. I can get 3 for that price,..patience. Tank bred usually have weaker colours and barring problems. Active lil sh!ts lol Edited June 5, 2014 by thatsright99
MichaelPark
Disagreeeee... less then $20 in shop for WC clowns... how much for local tank bred ? From this particular shop they came in 3 stages I believe. Premium, which were $220 a pair, $180 was middle of the range, and then $45 each for the lowest. Donny@ageofaquariums
Tank bred usually have weaker colours and barring problems. I have to disagree. What you see as a problem, I see as a design. Tank bred clowns...... apples aint apples. Thanks for the offer of procurement though. I have my 2 clowns, and thats enough for me Edited June 6, 2014 by Donny@ageofaquariums spelling
